Dolby Vision Hardware Recommendations

  • Hi! I’m new here and came across this project while looking for a way to play Dolby Vision Profile 7 FEL on a PC-based setup.

I haven’t bought any hardware yet and would appreciate a recommendation before I do.

    my setup / use case:

    • TV: LG OLED77CX9LA
    • sources: UHD Blu-ray remuxes in MKV, Profile 7 FEL (single-track, BL+EL+RPU); MP4 dual track possible too
    • goal: DV Standard (TV-led) output with full FEL reconstruction, no frame drops

    what I’ve gathered so far:

    • Intel 8th gen and newer are listed as supported. But 8th/9th gen iGPUs (UHD 620/630) only output HDMI 1.4 natively and depend on an LSPCon chip for HDMI 2.0. Does DV signaling work reliably through LSPCon at all?
    • N100/N150 are listed with occasional frame drops on some FEL files.
    • the reference hardware seems to be an i7-11390H / Iris Xe.

    my questions:

    1. is an 11th gen Iris Xe (e.g. i5-1135G7) a safe minimum for FEL, or is 12th/13th gen noticeably better?
    2. has anyone successfully used an 8th/9th gen machine with LSPCon for DV output, or should I avoid those entirely?
    3. are there specific mini PC models that users have already confirmed working (ideally with an LG OLED)?
    4. is dual-channel RAM required to get stable FEL playback on Iris Xe?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • As soon as Beta 4 is released (maybe today) i will test it on my N100, will post my findings here.

  • Hello

1- You CPU is safe for the FEL don't worry, since beta2 release a N100 can read without any problem and any drop a Remux with FEL and even the new pipeline "dolby vision master reference" that make no compromise on the picture quality and will be release today in Beta4, the only pipeline that a N100 do not handle is the DV adaptive HDR mapping at 50fps.

2- You need a native HDMI output, no DV support is possible with LSPCON or other HDMI converters. Sometimes the converter is integrated directly onto your motherboard, leaving you no way to get a true native HDMI output. This is quite common on 8th and 9th gen motherboards, so you have to be careful, unfortunately, this information is always tricky to find

3- Many miniPC works perfectly, take at least a N100 to be confortable.

4- no dual-channel is not required, my test benchs are a N100 with 8gb of ram in single channel and a AMD 7430U with dual channel. The 11390H was my first test bench and has been replaced.

  • thank you!

would this mini pc be a good choice:

    GEEKOM Air12 Lite, Intel N100 4 Kerne, max. 3,4 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, HDMI + DP-Dual-Screen-Display
or would 4GB of RAM be enough? or maybe 16GB be better ?

  • Hi, I have one more general question: does LibreELEC-x86-DV run entirely from a USB stick without using the internal SSD, so that I can keep Windows running on the mini PC for other purposes?

If so, I would likely choose an i3 or i5 processor instead of the N100, which would be too slow for Windows.

or is LibreELEC-x86-DV just perfectly optimized for the N100?

  • I’ve been searching for NUCs for days. now I found this one: ASUS Mini PC NUC14RVH | 'NUC14 Pro' |
    Core Ultra 5 125H | RAM: 16GB | SSD: 512GB
Does it have the right HDMI interface? It features 2 × HDMI 2.1 (TMDS). This would be a used purchase with no option for a return. :|

My best recommendation will be to wait at least the stable release and the feedback from other user.
We saw some small intel GPU working perfectly and other not so much (8/9 intel gen). I am pretty sure a 125H will be sufficient, but it's too overkill and I think a waste of money if you only want to use it as a DV player.

I will try to focus on the 3200U as a recommended hardware, I just received my mini PC I need to test and optimize.

  • Hi everyone, first post!

Anyone is using a dual boot solution? ...

    exactly my question :!:

    I would like to buy: ASUS Mini PC NUC14RVH| 'NUC14 Pro'|Core Ultra 5 125H | RAM: 16GB | SSD: 512GB| Windows 11 Pro

and I don´´t know if the hardware is perfect for DV FEL 24-60fps and if I can use Win11 in parallel :?:

  • I understand the need for shopping links, especially because hardware is quite expensive these days.

Sending shopping links by using private messages (PM) is preferred.

  • Thanks once again to CroqueMr, hadesdevls, dangerouslaser, cinemaONE, and everyone else for this awesome project, its been long overdue the humble PC took that media performance crown back.

Its sounding like the N100 mini pcs are still a top choice, would an AMD Ryzen H255/Ryzen 7 8745H with 8 core cpu and with Radeon 780M igpu be more better future proof or better optimised? Just trying to figure out which one to get.

  • Of course you can! Best way to do it is to install on separate ssd but dual boot on one ssd is possible also.

Search for a guide as this is not officially recommended/supported by Libreelec team.

  • I´ ve got no answere yet, so I ask again /shrug

A tool like Grub2Win should work for LibreELEC / Windows dual boot:

  • Been doing allot of research, I made a post here about the GMKtek G12
    https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=385600&pid=3315820#pid3315820

on the Aliexpress big sale coming up I expect this for barebones to go for £165, this is for a beast of a CPU, the GPU is 6x faster than an N100. the single core is twice as fast, the CPU is also configurable to 35W but it's beefy, and for this project the GPU wouldn't even sweat running. The best thing is it has CEC!!!! check my comments on Kodi forums. This isn't exactly cheap but value wise it destroys any of these low end 3 year old CPU (or even older if you thinking about 3500U)

It even has Oculink so you can add eGPU and game on it. Keep an eye out on sales in 2 weeks time. I'll share through PM if when times comes. I don't see why they won't go for £165 or £162. CEC is a game changer on this to! with the speed of this monster CPU it should be very quick to get into LibreELEC, thoughts?
