[x86-64] Dolby Vision w/FEL + Full 3D for PC (Intel & AMD, nVidia)

  • AMD hardware older than DCN... I have a Hades Canyon NUC (i7-8705G) with the Radeon RX Vega M GL. All its HDMI/DP outputs come from the Vega M, and I believe its display engine is DCE-generation (Polaris-based), not DCN. Claude reading linux-9920-amd-dcn-native-dv, dv_dcn_supported() only allows DCN versions, so I assume the patch rejects this GPU and it falls under "Other hardware"?

Is there a technical reason DCE can't do it, or is it just that you haven't tested it? If it's only the allowlist, would you consider adding DCE 11.x for testing, or point me to what would break?

Thanks again for all your work on this.

The primary technical constraint is me. There is no allowlist, it's the opposite, I need to tweak the drivers for each CPU category to adjust the HDMI signaling and create DV signaling. Therefore, I am prioritizing widely used hardware first. I prefer to start by ensuring a good support for popular CPUs rather than extending compatibility to all models and compromising on quality. Especially with a CPU as uncommon and niche as yours, I anticipate needing to handle quite a few nuances to ensure proper support.

I'm not sure which drivers your GPU relies on, so I prefer not to confirm anything. I don't plan on adding support for it myself it's complicated to do it properly blindly without the hardware, but feel free to try modding the driver with Claude if you have the hardware and if claude can test directly your GPU and LE it will be simple. If you manage to enable DV, send me your code and the kodi.log file so I can verify everything is fine, and I'll merge your driver into the global build.

  • With FEL, no issues?

    Thanks.

Zero issues with MI Dead Reckoning (Full FEL) and Dune Part 2 (not full). Tried on TCL tv in DV and more amazingly on my TW7100/3800 projector with dynamic tone mapping to HDR10!! Need to put an extra stick of ram for dual channel so I can use expert dynamic tone mapping to my target nits, checking FB marketplace. Even without it this is absolutely incredible and I can retire my shield pro and janky pc 3d setup that never work. Will be donating shortly thank you so much. Also note full passhthrough of DTS:X and TrueHD Atmos are working.

Only missing thing is the vertical shift doesn't work (which I use for my custom masking to shift image down and hide black borders with masking). Can't find where to donate both for DV and 3d?

Don't buy extra RAM, it won't help. This conversion process is just a draft in Beta3 and will be optimized in Beta4, maybe your hardware will be good enough

I've already updated the basic HDR10 conversion in my internal beta4 preview build, but since it's heavy on the GPU, I think low end chips like the N100 won't handle it, but we will see after the rebuild of the pipepline. In the next release Beta4 the performances and optimization will not moved we will be close to the R1.0.0 stable. Important point, in Expert mode, tone mapping is managed by the rendering engine in LE, so be sure to disable tone mapping on your TV/projector.

Determining whether a CPU/iGPU is powerful enough is tricky. Performance relies heavily on the rendering engine in the GPU, which is hard to benchmark, and other limiting factors are still not perfectly understand.

  • I tried a lot of videos of all codecs and DV and HDR, so far the only ones that have a problem is the UHD BR mkvs of the new Stranger Things UHD BR discs. If you try to resume it just show a black screen and just stay there no sound or image. If I start from the beginning I see the first 15 seconds approximately then it's a black screen frozen with no image or sound like when you resume.

Maybe others that have those can test to see if they have the same thing? I didn't see anything special in the metadata compared to other DV movies.

It is DV FEL though, but other DV FEL works flawlessly.

I can procure a short clip if wanted and also I'll try to get a kodi.log

Interesting, please send the log file I will try to see if I can fix it for the next release.

A small teasing for next release in the attachments

Very happy with this result, performance gain is stupidly massive on DV to HDR10, a N100 will therefore be able to handle all the features of the stable release without dropping a single frame.
The only limitation will be HDR<->DV conversion for movies at >50fps. That’s acceptable.

  • I was able to eek out some better performance on the 3500u box I have but still get huge spikes bringing up the OSD. Anyone else still seeing that issue?

That's normal, as the GUI puts a heavy load on the GPU. We worked with Dangerouslaser to include dedicated optimizations for this in beta 3.

Beta 4 won't include additional changes for this. However, I plan to investigate AMD specific optimizations next week. Intel is currently performing slightly better with FEL, whereas AMD has a limitation I'm trying to fix.

CroqueMr Do you think you can implement HDR10+ to DV conversion like they did in CoreElec's custom builds? No rush, just wondering.

It is in my backlog but this will be adressed after the release of R1.0.0 Stable.

I would particularly like to render Dolby Vision in HDR10+ for Samsung TVs (algo are different, picture will not be the same but we can try something), Since I don't own a HDR10+ TV, I won't be working on that.

  • Thanks a lot for all the work on this. I am just trying this out today, but strangely every time after rebooting libreelec for some reason Dolby Vision content stops working while HDR/SDR all keeps on playing fine. It seems the issue probably happens when trying to trigger Dolby Vision mode on my LG C5 as I do hear the audio playing but video output seems stuck on the Kodi interface it's pretty weird.. The only warning I can find in kodi.log is this but that's probably not saying a lot.

OutputPicture - timeout waiting for buffer

Using this Ryzen 7 7840HS with 780M gpu. Any idea what might be causing this or how even how to better troubleshoot ?

There are more optimizations possible for the OSD - but it is becoming overly complicated. Visual artifacting and general instability from trying to cache static OSD textures / portions of the frame are just and endless rabbit hole.

The builds in my repo will play a remux of gemini man at 60fps with the OSD open, but it still drops a few frames when the OSD is first opened up or you are navigating around playback controls. It also only works with Intel GPUs.

This also is heavily skin dependent. I think taking a version of esturary and stripping all gradient overlays from it could help.

At the end of the day there are like 2 films in 60fps UHD that I know of (gemini man and billy lynns long halftime walk) - certainly neither of which people are queuing up to watch every weekend.

  • Hi everyone. This thread and CroqueMr's fork got me started, so I'd like to share where it led: LibreELEC Hades, an unofficial LibreELEC build for x86_64 PCs that sends native Dolby Vision (Standard, TV-led) over HDMI from NVIDIA, AMD and Intel graphics, dedicated or built into the processor, profile 7 with the full enhancement layer included.

It began from CroqueMr's dvbridge module and Intel output (credited in the README) and adds:

    - NVIDIA output with NVIDIA's open kernel modules (GTX 16, RTX 20 and newer), through the driver's vendor InfoFrame property, 8 bpc and dithering off.
    - AMD output (amdgpu, recent display hardware, not DCN 1 or 2). It needs an HDMI TMDS link.
    - Profiles 7 FEL, 8.1 and 5, and Dolby Vision in two video tracks (Blu-ray .m2ts structure).
    - For integrated graphics: where a frame takes most of the refresh period it is prepared one refresh ahead, and the faster of two drawing paths is measured and remembered.
    - Kodi's refresh rate is kept, exact rates included. On NVIDIA it adds the exact 24, 30, 60 and 120 Hz modes the driver did not offer.
    - It fails closed: if the video, TV, link or driver does not qualify, the video plays the normal way, no black screen.
    - Dolby Vision shown as HDR10 (no tone mapping) where native output is not possible, profile 5 by default.
    - Safer defaults for a PC with other disks (internal disks hidden when started from USB), a small Windows installer and a diagnostic switch.

Seen working so far, with the test builds that led to this RC, on an LG C5: RTX 4080 SUPER, the integrated Radeon of a Ryzen 9 7950X3D, and an Intel Core i5-12450H laptop. Profile 7 FEL on all three (measured on the 4080 and the Radeon: 240 frames every 10 s, none dropped, FEL in every one), 8.1 and 5 on the 4080, TrueHD Atmos passed through on all three and DD+ Atmos on the 4080.

Everything else is untested, and that is where help would be great: other NVIDIA, AMD and Intel graphics, other TVs, and 3D (new in this version: 3D Blu-ray MVC decoding and switching a 3D display over HDMI, never tried on a 3D display).

    Repository: https://github.com/hadesdevls/LibreELEC-Hades
Release 1.0 RC1 (image, update .tar, Windows installer and the complete source): https://github.com/hadesdevls/Lib…es/tag/v1.0-rc1

Before trying: Secure Boot has to be off, and the TV input must advertise Dolby Vision Standard (on the LG C5, Quick Frame Transport off on that input; Hades tells you when an input offers only low-latency Dolby Vision). A USB SSD is much smoother than a stick.

It is unofficial: please report problems in the GitHub issues, not to LibreELEC or Kodi. A report with the diagnostic switch on helps a lot (a tick box in the installer, or rename DIAG-OFF.TXT to DIAG-ON.TXT on the boot partition); docs/diagnostics.md explains.

Many thanks to CroqueMr for the fork this grew from, to Dom Cobley and cinema-ONE for the 3D work it uses, and to everyone in this thread.

Hi, thank you for sharing your project and for all the hard work you've put into it.

I'm really looking forward to trying your build. I'll definitely give it a try and share my feedback and any issues I come across.

I also hope you can collaborate with CroqueMr and other developers in the future. It would be great to see everyone working together towards a LibreELEC build that supports a wider range of hardware, including Intel and AMD integrated graphics, as well as dedicated NVIDIA and AMD GPUs.

Most importantly, I hope we can achieve full Dolby Vision Profile 7 FEL support, with the entire enhancement layer properly processed without any compromises.

Really appreciate your efforts, and I wish you all the best with this project. Keep up the great work.

  • Nice :)

I will open your build and integrate what can be integrated in the next release. I am interested in your Nvidia/AMD GPU Support.
