LibreELEC 7.0 (Jarvis) release

  • I'm currently working through the list of recent changes to get a Jarvis build up and working under the new LibreELEC branding. This post will be edited once there is something to show :)

  • I hope this release comes out. My Apple TV is still on OpenElec 4.2 and I'd love to have a more recent build on it.
I've been thinking on how could I get the Kodi 17 beta since I'm loving the new skins, I'd build it myself if i knew how.

  • I stopped work on a Jarvis build due to lack of time but I will pick things up again once we have a final release out. At the moment Jarvis is the end of the road for AppleTV as Krypton contains major video changes that mean we can't just patch CrystalHD support back into Kodi. There are plans for Sam (OSMC) and myself to jointly look at what's required for Krypton, but it will be a lot of work, so no promises.

NB: The OE 6.0.1 build here: OpenELEC (unofficial) Kodi Isengard builds for AppleTV has Isengard code and plays about 500% better than the old 4.2.1 image.

  • I read your OE 6.0.1 page, it makes me want to go out and pick up a BCM970015 card to replace my 970012... Even though I don't use my AppleTV anymore. Great work chewitt!

Happy to see you guys are getting along with Sam as well, that seemed different with OE and he does come across as a nice guy.

  • I took a stab at converting the patch to Krypton. It starts just fine, but forwarding would give a jerky picture, which a slight backward skip would fix. Couldn't figure out what the problem was, and I don't have enough programming skills to debug properly or to write new code.

Sorry I didn't read this before. I tried OSMC on the Apple TV and I loved it, having full debian and apt-get was great, however the performance was aweful in my case without the Crystal HD. The same files that played great on OE would't work on OSMC.
I'm downloading OE 6.0.1 as I write this and I'm hoping for the best. Considering the current price for the CrystalHD upgrade I think I'll be better off investing a little more in a RPi3 or something similar, so I'm rooting for OE 6 to perform as well as the 4 does. I'll post my findings back after installing.

  • I wouldn't spend money on an AppleTV box now. We're only 5-months from the 10-year anniversary of the original iTV announcement and there are far too many good (and cheap) alternatives around.

  • I'm about 75% done on an LE release which may/might get finished later in the month if I can spend less time on planes and more time at home.

great to hear that you are nearly finished with the release
    can't wait for it

I wouldn't spend money on it either, even though it gets at least 10 hours of use per week in my house. I tried OSMC on it and it didn't work for me as I expected, however the OE build you pointed me to runs great and has been a really nice bump for this device. Any plans on doing a LE build for the ATV after all?

  • OpenELEC for Apple TV 1gen didn't work for me I think this was because I didn't have a broadcom HDMI card.
And I still don't have a card. so is there any way that libreelec could work please and support apple boxes without the card too. ? I don't mind being a beta tester.

  • No LE build exists (it's not making it very high up my to-do list, sorry) and the OE build works fine with or without a Broadcom card.

  • That's odd, my apple tv sound on original firmware is fine through the HDMI on OpenELEC I have no sound at all.

then there is something wrong with your settings
check what you have configured in kodi

How is this different from Sam's OSMC on ATV1?

  • They're both similar (over time we've both absorbed each others technical tweaks) so the primary difference is in the underlying distro packaging. There are some who swear OE is better than OSMC, and others that swear the opposite. Try them both; see which works best for you.
