[RPi5] A/V Stuttering when playing from Jellyfin Server

  • Hello,

    The Problem:
I'm running libre elec on a raspberry pi 5 and streaming from a jellyfin server using the jellyfin addon. During movie playback, sometimes it will start stuttering / skipping. This applies to both the audio and video, and the stuttering seems to be at a consistent frequency.

    What I've Tried:

    • Stopping the movie (as in, pressing the stop button) and then resuming playback does not stop the stuttering.
    • Restarting the device DOES seem to resolve the issue
    • Arbitrarily skipping around within the movie does not resolve the issue
    • Manually watching the temperature via SSH (command is watch -n 1 "cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp | awk '{print \$1/1000 \" °C\"}'") seems to indicate that the temperature does not approach the 80 degrees C threshold for soft throttling
    • No indication that bandwidth is an issue on the LAN
    • The OS and Jellyfin plugin are both set to automatically update and so I assume they are up to date

Any assistance in diagnosing the problem would be greatly appreciated.

The logs from this occurring can be found here: https://paste.libreelec.tv/unsolitary-arianne.log

    Thanks in advance!

  • The log looks like the device is continually trying to realign audio/video. That's either something from the Jellyfin server or perhaps the network, but my guess is this is about CPU load. It's not clear if you are running Jellyfin on the same RPi? (the Docker add-on is there but we don't list its containers anywhere) but I do notice that 1080p media is being played at (and thus scaled to) 4K.

Implement the whitelist and recommendations here: https://wiki.libreelec.tv/configuration/4k-hdr. This will result in a 1080p home screen and 1080p media playing at 1080p instead of being CPU scaled to 4K. This might not be cause, but as most skins are 720p or at most 1080p native GUI performance will be improved anyway, and it's good to rule this out.

  • imho you get best jellyfin experience, if you organize your library in a way that does not require transcoding.

Maybe check video playing jellyfin ui, if it is doing transcoding.
