Differences between OE and LE?

Hey guys.
I know there's probably 100.000 things to do and write up in relation to this new ELEC version, but I was hoping that this question could be prioritized:

What is the main technical differences between OE and LE?
I'm thinking in terms of plugin support and that kinda thing, will there be any breakage or is that impossible to say? (I have very little understanding of how it's all put together).

I figured a lot of people would start to look for an answer for this question quickly when discovering this new ELEC version, so perhaps it needs to be clear from the start

Anyway:

Most plugins are for Kodi itself and not for the OS. Some of them are platform specific. As LibreELEC has a similiar platform as OpenELEC has (and both are Linux based) there will be no big difference. If a plugin doesn't work, it's mostly incompatbility with Kodi itself. Then the addon-dev has to fix it and make it work on newer Kodi versions.

So it's very hard to say "all plugins will work" as it might depend if the maintainer does his homework. But, what can be said is, that if an addon works fine in Kodi, there is a good chance, that it will work under LibreELEC, too.

I think the biggest difference we will see is new versions of Libre follow Kodi on a timely matter. So final Jarvis out, boom new Libre out. Openelec seems to have slowed its own release schedule based on the platform and sponsors behind them. I think both will be good solutions just one more in tune with the Kodi release schedule.

WeTek (who are good folks) have not negatively influenced the OE release schedule. They're as much in the dark as everyone else

Wouldn't it be easier for the Users to call the LE Build with Kodi 17 included LE 17, and not LE 8.0?

I agree that le version numbers following kodi release numbers would be useful.

I now have installed the LE plus an addon to update Openelec
This addon have the Millhouse and the Openelec updates >
How to update LE if there are newer or dev updates

Number schemes were discussed among the team and while tracking Kodi versions is good (as it highlights whats inside) it also makes us beholden to the Kodi versioning system and could equally cause confusion. We also need to consider people cross-grading from OE and trying to figure out what we are vs. OE. The compromise reached is the format "LibreELEC 7.0 (Jarvis)" ..which respects heritage (we're mature, not v1.0) allows cross-compairson to OE, avoids having two distinct sets of numbers in the name, but still highlights what's inside. So on anything official like release announcements and file download lists - that's the format you should see.

Once official alpha/beta builds start they will be versioned and the auto-update system can be used to flag new builds. If you're using Leopold's updater add-on the temp fix is to scrape Index of /builds/stable/ where he's posting things. Official builds should be along soon-ish

Tried to do it that way , but I ended with a 404 error
so work arround ssh copy the milhouse file to .update and stat again
But what i find strange is that in the Milhous openelec version Kodi is 17 while in Milhouse LibreElec it is 16.
For as i can see on a short time everything works

It was "a build made by Milhouse" (and LE, so v16) but not "a Milhouse build" (which would be v17) so we can see the confusion. Some official builds will be along shortly ..not built by Milhouse, and he plans to resume his Milhouse builds (via Kodi forums as usual). Are we all clear (as mud) now?

Yes sorry, these early builds are plain LE master builds, ie Kodi 16, as this is what will be released initially and needs testing/feedback. These releases from me will be ad-hoc (in terms of frequency) as we merge additional code and changes. Once we release the first Alpha these builds of mine will no longer be necessary.

My "bleeding edge" LE/Kodi 17 builds will follow, and will replace my current OE test builds.

The comments in these conf files are a bit misleading. For example Generic and RPi1/2/3 are at 4.4.6 (the pull request is only for updating the patches not for the kernel itself), you can easily check by looking at the package file: LibreELEC.tv/package.mk at master · LibreELEC/LibreELEC.tv · GitHub
