I’ve been a long-time user of LibreELEC, mostly running it on various Raspberry Pi models over the years. However, I’ve recently started hitting some performance walls, specifically when trying to navigate through a very large library using high-resolution skins or playing back high-bitrate 4K HDR files. The UI just doesn't feel as snappy as I'd like, so I’ve decided it’s finally time to move over to a dedicated x86 mini-PC build.
I’m currently looking at a hardware kit that includes 16GB of DDR5-4800MHz (PC5 38400). I know LibreELEC is incredibly lean by design—which is why we all love it—but I’m curious if anyone here has noticed a tangible difference in real-world performance when moving to higher bandwidth memory like PC5 38400. In my current setup, library scraping and large-scale artwork caching can be quite sluggish, and I’m hoping the jump to DDR5 will help smooth out those background processes.
One specific point I’m thinking about is the video buffer settings. With 16GB of RAM available, I’m planning to significantly bump up the cache size in my advancedsettings.xml to better handle uncompressed 4K rips from my local server. My personal insight from older builds is that more RAM usually helps with stability, but I’ve never worked with DDR5 on a "Just enough OS" (JeOS) like this before. It feels like a massive leap from a 2GB or 4GB Pi, and I want to make sure the OS actually utilizes that extra overhead effectively.
Has anyone here gone the "overpowered HTPC" route with newer memory architectures? I'm particularly interested to know if the latest stable builds handle the newer chipset timings without any weird driver quirks.
Does the community feel that the jump to DDR5 is overkill for a media center, or does that extra bandwidth actually help with 10-bit HEVC decoding and general UI fluidness?
