[x86-64] LibreELEC on GMKtek G3 Plus

  • Matrix (LE10) uses python2, while Nexus (LE11), Omega (LE12), and Piers (LE13) use python3. Our distro packaging ensures the OS update is trivial, but the python change typically causes add-on crashes, so our official advice is to not do any kind of in-situ upgrade from a python2 version to python3 version.

In practice, and if you know your way around the LE and Kodi filesystem, you can drop an LE12 update file in /storage/.update, then stop Kodi, rename /storage/.kodi to /storage/.kodi-old, and reboot to update. This results in a clean LE12 environment, and it's then simple to stop Kodi, copy back essential bits from /storage/.kodi-old/userdata to /storage/.kodi/userdata, and restart Kodi. You can copy addon settings from the previous install, but you need to reinstall all add-ons from repos to get python3 compatible versions.

  • I am in this club. I also bought a GMKtek G3+ N150.

After reading this thread, I installed latest software without a problem but when I tried to reach server, LibreELEC is asking for "user" and "password".

Sharing of my folders on the server are set to "everybody". I don't use any login, and all my other RPi and NUCs don't ask for user and password after I set SMB client to minimum protocol version and maximum protocol version = SMBv1 and set Use Legacy security to ON.

Fact is that all my other versions of LE are older; from 9.2.6 to 11.0.6. Is there a bug in latest version of LE? (2025-01-25)

hey how are you finding the g3 mini plus in terms of sound, is everything working that you want, how about CEC or wake from LAN. Just trying to decide between the g3 mini plus for £98 compared to the Minix Z100 which costs £189 second hand (almost like new)

The g3 mini plus has the n1500 which is marginally better too. any help is appreciated thanks

  • sky42 sorry for repeat question, I don't know how to edit my comment, I've seen you have the minix Z100 and are a developer, how do you find it in LibreELEC, would you say it can do everything a Pi5 in LibreELEC can do? My friend says the OSD in LibreELEC for the pi5 is over saturated. so if the N100 platform isn't over saturated, it's a viable replacement. I don't want to sacrifice on speed , so it has to be at least as fast as Pi.

I can get the Minix Z100 for £190 all in, do you think it's worth it ? really do appreciate any help you can offer thanks

  • Sorry i can not speak for things like saturation, because my eyes are pretty bad.

To be fair i use N100, RPi4, RPi5. If somthing is fishy on m Z100 i try one of the RPi's.
And for DolbyVision i use a CE S905X4 box.

My Z100 with the N100 is my daily driver, a bit faster then a RPi5 and i am fairly happy with it. I found just one problem and a workaround for that.
Intel Alder Lake 2160p @ 23.976 Hz passthrough HD Audio dropouts (i7-1270p/N100)

  • Thankyou for getting back to me, I was most concerned about noise and the G3 mini Plus was almost half price but with a fan and worse build design. really thought I'd b able to replace the Pi5 which is a beast but I do notice the my SK1 gives a better audio and picture quality but it's far slower than the Pi5. Pi5 is almost perfect if not for a few flaws (over saturation, HDR10+ looks slightly better on my TV). Because of your comment I've realised their is no perfect device for all occasion. and it's worth seeing how these N100 systems do for my setup. I've decided to get the cheaper g3 mini plus, it's even got the N150, though it's not much different to the N100.

Thanks for your help and for your continued support on this platform, I'm sure I'll be making use of it and looking forward to how this hardware will perform, but for $129 N150, 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, it's a nice deal thx

I love customizing Kodi. Coming from slower devices like the Mi Box 2nd Gen and the Zidoo Z9X, I’m satisfied — it’s fast, and you can go all out with your setup without worrying about slowdowns.

Unfortunately, there’s no CEC support and only HDR10, but HD audio passthrough works very well, which was a big issue for me when running Kodi on my older devices. In terms of audio quality, I find the Z9X better than LibreELEC on the GMKtek G3 Plus.
