Nightly Builds

  • VDPAU has been deprecated for quite a while now, Nvidia's moved to the CUDA based nvdev/nvenc API.

As kodi doesn't support nvdec the nvidia-vaapi-driver is now used - kodi uses vaapi and the nvidia-vaapi-driver "translates" that to nvdec.

Nvidia RTX50XX (plus future models) aren't supported in LE as they would require a different kernel driver (which only supports very recent nvidia cards so we can't just switch to that as it would drop support for a lot of older cards).

Trying to support nvidia cards has been a huge PITA in the last year (even more painful than before) and is bloating our images a lot (all the proprietary nvidia libraries and firmwares are huge) so I wouldn't be surprised if we end nvidia support sooner than later.

    so long,

    Hias

  • Hey Devs.

This is just a general question because im on the last nightly before the mesa switch and i would really like to move forward and enjoy the latest fixes of kodi/libreelec+kernel updates

Tested LibreELEC-Generic-legacy.x86_64-13.0-nightly-20251220-fc8aea0.img.gz on my pc with nvidia rtx3070 and its very sluggish, when i bring up any kind of menus etc while watching a tv series the video freezes but audio continius and the video speeds up. if i press stop then play again same thing happens right at start, video freeze while sound goes on. when i started a tv serie and did "nvidia-main-smi or nvidia-smi" vaapi only uses 4% of the gpu vs vdpau of 35-38%

I cant give any logs because i just tested with a stock install with def skin. i just wanted to see how it preformed.

Is it really this bad with vaapi layer to nvidia or there is tweaks you devs can do in either mesa or smth else

Ohh forgot that im on a 10gbe internal network, content isn't local, tested samba speeds and i get over 1gbit/s there

    Kind Regards Patrick

  • I'm wondering if the elfarto VAAPI shim works better: https://github.com/elFarto/nvidia-vaapi-driver/

NB: Our general advice since 2016 is to avoid the purchase of nVidia hardware for LE use due to distro packaging for nVidia support being a clusterfcuk. The nature of the clusterfcuk has changed a few times over the years, but with each improvement nVidia never fails to add some new complication that keeps the status quo intact.

  • Hmm ok.

I dont have a spare pc so i cant build myself but i wish to "donate" to your business to get a fresh build with old mesa vdpau +kernel update, newest nvidia driver, libreelec fixes and latest kodi githaash. its a like "normal" build you guys do but with the last mesa that has vdpau :)

PM me if some one of you devs are interested in that. ;)

    Regards

  • Donations to project funds are always welcome but if there's even a hint of an expectation of a donation buying special treatment or custom images; keep your wallet closed to avoid disappointment.

Don't get me wrong but i dont expect anything moving forward beyond this "special vdpau" image, for me its like i "pay" for you to take some time and make it. It was just a suggestion and i hope none of you got offended by it.

  • Good morning This is just for your information

Since I always make a backup before every new thing (test *.img or add-on update (for testing)),

I noticed that I cannot make a backup under the version LibreELEC-RPi5.aarch64-13.0-nightly-20260105-77cd820.img.gz (2026-01-05 22:08) (it crashes when I select the disk)

When I go back to version LibreELEC-RPi5.aarch64-13.0-nightly-20260105-c4ca2ce.img.gz (2026-01-05 07:36) these "problems" do not occur

!Just for your information, nothing more

Keep up the good work and thanks to the Kodi team (Happy New Year to all)

  • Hey Devs.

Weird problem here, i upgraded to latest nightly LibreELEC-Generic-legacy.x86_64-13.0-nightly-20260219-d9818f3.img from LibreELEC-Generic-legacy.x86_64-13.0-nightly-20251113-23bf829.img and "watched flags" is gone on everything. The database was processed and upgraded with all my content from MyVideos139.db to MyVideos141.db and both files have the same size.

I tested Kodi on windows too and the same problem occurs there but "watched flags" are gone

Is there a way to fix it? i mean can i manually use like SQLlite and readd them so they "appear"?

    Regards

  • hi

    imho

    MyVideos139.db (November) and MyVideos140.db (November/December) are still from 2025
MyVideos141.db has been used since 2026 (January)
If you can, please try an "update" (if you have a backup) to the year 2025 (November/December)
    and then test MyVideos139.db
This is just a suggestion for testing

    Kind regards, jd

  • Hey.

Thank you for the suggestion but...

"watched flag" in the 141.db converted by upgrade is readable in 2025 versions of Libreelec but is not readable not in 2026 version of libreelec. There must have been a major change in sql database handling?

Ive tried upgrade 139.db to 141.db via the nightly-20260219-d9818f3.img file i noted in my first post="watched flag" is gone, i then moved the converted 141.db file to my old nightly-20251113-23bf829.img with renaming it 139.db="watched flag is there" :). Then i upgraded to latest nightly="watched flag" is gone again
