Using samba you likely did create some files/directories with capital letters. Do:

mkdir -p /storage/.config/firmware/rtw88
wget -P /storage/.config/firmware/rtw88 https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/plain/rtw88/rtw8822c_fw.bin

You may have to download rtw8822c_wow_fw.bin too.

I've got them in /Configfiles/firmware/rtw88/rtw8821c_fw.bin now but that isn't working. Can I take it that /.config/ is not /Configfiles/ I have hidden files shown and I do not see /.config/

It is .config on a Linux level, it is Configfiles on a Samba level.

Folders and files starting with a .dot are hidden in Linux.

Use ls -al for a full listing in a Linux terminal.

I think you have inadvertently got me to download the wrong version with that. A prior post said

rtw8821c_fw.bin

PuTTY is refusing to allow me to paste in Mint. It worked once now refuses. I have downloaded both firmwares but the WOW version is also 22c not 21c. I think it should only be the 21c version if I am not mistaken.

All done correctly using PuTTY and the correct firmware, I think, which is version 21c but still not working. Link below.

The WiFi works okay in Linux Mint but wasn't installed initially. I had to install third party drivers which were in the drivers section of that.

Do you think it's worth posting this problem elsewhere or am I definitively screwed. Any recommendations?

I think Libreelec beta 2 is using Linux kernel 5.10 so would the following work?

The Linux Kernel 5.9 version comes with a broken rtw88 module developed by Realtek that has poor compatibility with most revision of the 8821ce chip.

You must disable it by adding the following to your module blacklists (/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Then, make sure you have the rtl8821ce module correctly installed.

Turn off your computer, wait a few seconds (to force firmware reload) and then turn it on again.

Sorry for the 8821 to 8822 fault.

Usually third party Realtek drivers can be included into a community build, but will not be added any more to official builds.

You can use the existing drivers as exsamples.

No problem I appreciate the help. Not sure what you mean. Do you mean it won't be fixed in an official build of Libreelec?

I've just found a "community build" by "Sky42" version 10 generic. Do you think this will fix my WiFi problem?

Some articles on rfe 2 support - it looks like it actively being worked on in the kernel. Worth checking RFE6 support with that Larry’s firmware

"The rtl8821ce chip has multiple variants. As of now only RFE 0 and 1 are supported in the release. A fix for RFE 2 is in the works, other types have no ETA yet."

Unlikely, unless there was motivation to include the external driver by owning such a realtek chip.

Dumped the Ethernet as I found an ancient WiFi dongle that I thought was useless, guess what, I found a use for it. And I now have WiFi.
