External HDD write protected

  • Hi guys, I have an issue with my setup.

I have a rpi/libreelec setup with an external hdd connected via usb.

Samba enabled so I transfer movies/tv shows to my library which is stored on the HDD.

The problem is I can't write anything to the disk or transfer files from my windows PC even though Libreelec and HDD content is visible. Anyone knows how to solve this? People on reddit suggested reformating (which is last resort since there's a bunch of media on it) and using sftp which also doesn't work. /shrug

  • Run a disk check from Windows. It's likely there is an issue with the filesystem and Linux mounts the drive read-only to prevent writing new data to a damaged filesystem.

  • Thanks for the reply, I tried that. Windows found no issue with the disk.

  • At the end of your log - you will see the culprit.

Either you have a cheap PSU for your RPi, or you are trying to power your HDD from the USB.

    1) Power the HDD from a powered Hub, if not all ready done, or it's already externally powered.

    2) Buy a decent PSU - the official Raspberry PSU is known to work, without issues.
