Intel true 10bits/HEVC/HDR support... ?

  • Hi everyone.


    Intel HD500, HD600 series…. seem able to decode HEVC and generate 4k images.


    But I have serious doubts about how many of those are truly able to deliver 10bits HDRs through their display interfaces.


    Intel only seems to guarantee HEVC/10bits/4k/HDR in their HD620 model and correctly implemented in Display Port 1.3 / HDMI 2.0b so, probably, not all nucs, motherboards, etc.. support that full features in their firmware specs, ...


    Is there any list of "confirmed platforms" able to deliver 10bits HDR based entirely on Intel integrated graphics cards ?


    Are there some known combinations/platforms which, on the contrary, can't deliver true 10bits/HDR ?


    Maybe the question sounds a bit stupid but I'm truly confused about this issue.

    I'm not aware of the generation cut-off point for HDR support as "NUC" now covers eight generations of hardware that vary in capability, but I can confirm Intel needs to add HDR support to their video driver before the subset of NUC's that are capable can do it. The first submission of patches to the Linux kernel to start adding HDR support was only last week so it will be a while yet before things are usable.

    Is this at least a positive sign of getting hdr support at sometime in the future, even if it takes a long time - we previously had nothing to go on.

    Question: Will we see these Linux/LibreElec HDR updates in the new LE 9 at some stage or will we have to wait for LE 10?

    I'm not expecting the kernel patch sets to be merged quickly as it touches a bunch of code and everyone's aware that it lays the groundwork for how HDR is handled in other SoC/GPU types .. so there's lots of chefs in the kitchen. LE 10.0 is far enough out that it should be a safe 'yes' and LE 9.0 is a definite 'no' but hopefully one of the interim LE 9.x releases we make between them will add support to the K18 codebase.

  • It looks like it’s a few months away based on an email thread by Linux devs I found in a Google search recently. They were still discussing HDR implementation design early this month.

    Still work in progress, but as the API's are fairly stable now we've started to experiment with the Kodi side of things. It will take time as there's far too much stuff to get our heads around and we need to coordinate changes over multiple GPU types. In the future Kodi will have A1+ support for all this but you'll have to wait for a blog post to find out why :)

  • I compiled this LibreELEC Generic build:


    - GBM/OpenGLES, X11 removed

    - linux-next-20190510 kernel with HDR patchset rev.9

    - Kodi 19 with VideoLayerBridgeDRMPRIME: set HDR metadata PR.


    Anyone wanna try it? I tested it on my Asrock J4105 board and it works ok. However, I can't test the HDR functionality because I don't have a HDR capable display yet.


    Note that some Kodi addons that use OpenGL will stop working and will have to be recompiled for OpenGLES.
