MCE remotes work fine, too. Maybe you already have one of those, because some notebooks had it as a package goody.

If your computer display is lower than 4k, then check your HDMI cable. Maybe CEC and sound transmission suffers due to a slow HDMI cable. Make sure your cable is HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 standard to be conform to 4K.

Use our forum search function with keyword "hdmi_enable_4kp60=1".

Make sure your HDMI cable is HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 standard. That's necessary to transmit high data rate at 4K.

Most people prefer to use the TV remote control in combination with CEC. Then the TV will transmit RC signals over HDMI cable to the RPi. On the TV side it may be necessary to activate CEC at first. On the RPi side it's activated by default.
Try to find the CEC settings on the TV. Sometimes CEC has different names, like "Viera Link" for Panasonic etc. That's the most comfortable solution for your parents.

At some older TV's it's necessary to enforce an HDMI mode at config.txt. Add this lines for 1080p at 60Hz:
Read here about the complete list of available HDMI modes.

You've got to be joking, right?
Wrong. I removed your last text screen shot. Maybe you start learning to read that way.

I haven't found related errors at your log. We already had users, who suffered low speed on external devices. Often a better cable was the answer. If you already tested the cable, then advancedsettings.xml is worth to play with. Especially have a look at chapter 2.8.4 Cache.

Sounds good to me.

Can it also be told to boot to / force a res in addition to telling the hdmi to be hot / on ?
Absolutely. You need to define hdmi_group and hdmi_mode to enforce your preferred resolution. Read here for setting values.

bpr323 Please provide a link to a complete log file.
No more text screen shots, cut and paste the text instead.

Does the top command say, it's still kodi.bin?
-
The RPi Zero is kind of a stick, but you'll get no 4K with it.
-
Maybe you have to activate showing hidden files first, because .kodi/addons is the folder you need to access.
-
No problems if you have no need to calibrate. Give it a shot.
