I am sorry, guys, I am newbie, but I want that board for three purposes - for experiments with pins (for I2C, SPI communication with my sensors at home), for my "smart home" and for playing some video stuff like online-TVs and Blue-Ray Rips in 4K. That videos are as huge as CPU i7 with NVidia GT 840m sometime lags on playing that :).
Will it play 4K@30 videos without any lags?
Buy a board with S905X (VIM, C2). It can play UHD BD in 4k without any problem.
They clearly stated that there is no fbdev libmali driver for VIM2.
They recommend it for headless server, etc.
If you want to use it as a media player or linux desktop then better to forget it.
Khadas VIM has S905X.

Easier if you don't start from scratch but find a well commented remote.conf and just change the keycodes according to your remote's codes.
I tried to install to internal with SSH. Now X96 works without SDcard.
But when I try to go back to Android it is not possible anymore. I have used a toothpick for the resetbutton in AV port. X96 Boot logo appears. But TWRP recovery does not start and Internal recovey do not start. It only hangs in Boot logo. I tried via SSH command reboot recovery. Again X96 logo appears but hangs in it. Is there another possibility to install Android again?
Why did you install to internal if you need android?
You can put back android with USB burning tool and the firmware image for your box.

I have read the FAQ, of this forum and others dealing with that same problem. I have tried what has been advised, all of it, naming the file remote.conf and also sometimes rc_maps.cfg, depending on who you ask. I have tried putting it in the /storage/.config folder and also in the /storage/.config/rc_keymaps folder depending on who you ask. I have tried countless files downloaded from a lot of different sources. I have even changed the batteries on the remote, mind you. And still, it does not work.
I am feeling stupid going after these instructions, blindfolded.
What I am lacking here is 2 things:
- how can I make sure that I have the right conf file and then restricts the tests to one and only one file?
- how can I monitor the process of loading the file by LE ? This to make sure I am actually loading something
As it written thousand times (maybe you should search harder) there is an easy way to check what's going on with your remote.
Login on ssh to your box, push a button on your remote and type dmesg.
You will see an error message with the code of your remote sent and you can find (or create) the neccessary remote.conf based on this code.
I am on 8.0.2e flashed and booting from internal. Do I need to update the device tree before upgrading to 8.1.1? And whats the best way to upgrade the device tree?
Not before, but at the same time. Put it in the update folder with the .tar file. Reboot.

Thank you, this is the first LE on my box which doesn't forget the settings I make after reboot.
Unfortunately it freezes sometimes in the menu but it plays even the UHD BD streams.

I wanted to try it (fresh install with kszaq's 8.2 dtb) but it stucked at the second setup page, I cannot go futher, the next button does nothing.
I tried this version and found it very good.
It can play the 4k HDR movies too without that washed out look that present in all previous 8.x.x versions.
I've updated from JG's testing version and cannot find any difference.
Obviously, you haven't installed it correctly to internal memory. Try to use another dtb (nand)
No, it's not normal. You should be able to boot without card too.
I'm using libreelec since version 8.0, installed on sd card. Is memory installation better? Will the device run even faster (GUI)?
I haven't noticed any speed difference between decent SD card (Sandisk 80 MB/s) and internal memory. Fast enough both.
