I keep getting notifications that I'm using Kodi 17.3 and that 17.4 is available. I've got LE 8.0.2 set to update automatically but it doesn't seem to be working. Or maybe I'm missing something? How do I install the update for 17.4?

LibreELEC does not notify of newer Kodi versions, only of newer LibreELEC versions.
LibreELEC 8.1.0 beta is currently the latest build. And that is not being autoupdated from a stable build.
Perhaps one of your installed add-ons is getting a bit over-enthousiastic.

Is there an update notification setting in Kodi? Cant remember, but maybe I need to track it down and disable it?

Perhaps you are reading the RSS-ticker? That may have the 17.4 announcement.
Otherwise I have no clue. Why not provide a kodi.log with some details?

You were right. Found the version check addon. Don't think I'll have a need for it in the LE build.

Sorry, is it possible to update Kodi from 17.3 to 17.4 (using LibreElec 8.0.2) in an easy way without loosing my settings?

Apart form hijacking someone else's topic *cough*... The answer is no. You cannot separately upgrade Kodi in side LibreELEC.
Upgrading LibreELEC itself normally has no impact on your settings with minor updates.

Thank you!
Isn't the way it is shown in this video

That's going to upgrade to the latest version of OpenElec not LibreElec and not Kodi (since the latest version of OE uses kodi 17.3 IIRC).
I don't use the OE builds but I believe that none of that is required anymore. With LE minor version bumps are installed automatically.

That video is a long detour compared to the current way to update. You don't need an extra (Windows) tool, you copy the update file to the .update folder via Samba, and reboot.

OK, but as I understand this work automatically (the LibreELEC update and not the kodi update).

yes if you activated autoupdate, if not you can do it manually via the LibreELEC Settings or you can just download and copy the file into update directory - your choice

In LE 8.0.2 - enter LE settings - set update to manual - set update channel to libreelec-8.0 - check for updates - select 8.1.0 - let it update. This will give you 8.1.0 which will automatically update to 8.1.1 sometime in the next 48h (prob) and eventually to 8.2.0 when released.
LE before 7.0.3 or any OE devices need to do it the old way copying .tar files around.
