I see i386 support was withdrawn from LibreElec some time back. Does that mean I cannot compile if from scratch for my i386 machine? I have an old HP Netbook with a nice graphics card that I wanted to turn into a media centre. Is this simply not possible any longer?

You can, but you'll need to add "i386" to PKG_ARCH in some packages that are only x86_64 now like so: libva: add i386 to target arch · escalade/LibreELEC.tv@5d51066 · GitHub

It's funny to me that there is support for RPi's and IMX6's, but that the arch that's [arguably] almost certainly still the #1 architecture around the world has had support for it dropped. I know x86_64 is the next best thing, but with such an abundance of these machines lying around, one would imagine it would still very much in demand.
Could be that I'm out of touch of course.
I doubt there is an abundance of these machines that people want to use for HTPC purposes, seeing as they are old noisy and consume a lot of power. The RPi on the other hand is tiny, fanless and could even run on a battery. I think most of the LE userbase is on RPi, although not quite sure.
When we dropped support from OE (about 3.5 years ago) there were approx. 1,500 total i386 users in 400k+ active installations. The decision to drop was about saving time/effort during x86 development and was never about whether 32-bit things could be built. There are numerous other platforms that remain 32-bit which ensures a level of compatibility if you patch support back in.
