Compatibility finished on old hardware ?

  • I tried an update ( manual update using generic-legacy first, after failure, also with generic only ) on an old Acer One 255 netbook.

    Until 10.0.4 ( 19.5 ) everything worked like a breeze.

Now, after update to release 11 , the pc remain stuck after flashing image intro.

What files can I provide in order to give the needed info to someone that could explain me where's the problem ?

I can access the pc , connected on network by cable and with SMB working ( it seems).

Last message before shutting down flashes too fast to stop and read it, just saw a "failed to finalize........something....)

Now, downgraded to 10.0.4 again, and restored a backup I made before upgrading. All working good again.

Wish to know if the reason for failure is some I can correct before trying a new upgrade. or leave any hope to upgrade because HW maybe too old.

Kind regards and thanks for answering, eventually

  • There is no such thing as a "stuck" screen, only GPUs that are perhaps no longer supported (or loading the wrong driver) and thus never overwrite the boot splash with Kodi. You should still be able to SSH into the box and run "pastekodi" to share a URL so we can see what's wrong or not working.

NB: LE does not (and never will) guarantee to support all hardware. It's nice if things can keep going, but if older hardware doesn't align with our long-term technical direction and desire to keep the distro simple, we aren't going to bend over backwards to support it.

  • just saying, we haven't dropped any hardware so likewise a bug or like chewitt said it uses the wrong driver for some reason

  • As suggested, I tried again to upload using generic-legacy. After locking and reboot, restarted in debug mode.

Here follow the "pastekodi" link. Hope will be useful for the "gurus" to see what's the problem.

BTW, this is my "backup" notebook. In living room have another one, old as well...( Packard Bell EasyNote ME69BMP Netbook ) and hope solution, if found, will be good for it also.

Otherwise...."au revoir" with another next pastekodi after trying to update that one too.

    Kind regards

The GPU fails to create the OpenGL surface needed for Kodi ^

CvH I'm wondering if this device requires the older i965 driver?

  • Checked the other netbook for HW, from what I see, same issue will come for video driver. Here the results.

Videi driver is i915, that was cut as well, from last kernel, I see.

So, no upgrade is possible for both, currently, I presume.

  • This thread shows finally a successful installation of 11.0.0 on an Intel Atom Z3735F.

For a test create an installation stick of Generic or Generic-Legacy and boot into run mode. The installation will not be touched.

  • This thread is about N455 Pineview, the other thread about Z3735F Bay Trail.

Please don't mix the removed classic/i915 mesa driver with drivers of other components named i915, especially the i915 kernel driver.

Does this mean you say "successful" an install with working wi-fi and no video driver ? Funny.....
