Starting to see lots of interesting options using these SOC's coming to market, do you think they'll get mainline support? or perhaps LE too?

Despite theses SoCs were release just a few month ago - they are already supported in mainline kernel - check https://github.com/torvalds/linux…hip/rk356x.dtsi which parts are already there (also in mainline u-boot).
Main reason they haven't been added to LE yet: The missing driver for the display controller which is entirely new and adding it will be kind of a huge effort. Adapting video codec drivers should be relatively easy as they are "just" an evolution to the previous ones.

Is this that huge effort: https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/linux-…/?series=634531 ?
If so, then it seems we're getting close

24 patches is a huge patch series for just one functionality and only 10 patches were acked or reviewed, so this will probably have a few more rounds before it's merged. Window for drm contributions for 5.19 is also almost over, so 5.20 at the earliest.

I guess I spoke too soon. Initial DRM driver landed in drm-misc and it will be in 5.19: https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm/drm-misc/c…9a78c721b778c16

Yeeh
Looks like a LOT is happening lately and it also seems with increased velocity \o/
https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/linux-rockchip/list/ is rather interesting to follow

I have been using rk356x LE on my devices for a long time, it works quite well.

Which system is in eMMC ? Try to pull out the SD card and re-insert it, I regularly observe strange glitches when the SD card does not work when first installed in the card reader and you need to turn off the power, pull out the SD card and re-insert it and turn on the power. If it doesn't work. How did you record the LE image ? If the SD card was previously used for other systems, it needs to be completely cleaned and recorded.
