Would it be possible to get the mc2xml program included in the builds? That way we can run the xml grabber on the same system and feed it into tvheadend directly. This is especially needed her in the US as our ATSC epg info is not very reliable!
Since LE is a closed system - I don't think we can install the code on our own.

I am, but you have to run a program to download the SD data into an XMLTV for tvheadend to read. Unless I'm missing some other config, that conversion has to take place on another machine since we can't install any programs on an LE build.
On a side note, I've reached out to the creator of mc2xml to see if he would write a Kodi addon version of the program.
From what I see the author distributes statically linked binary for Linux (x86). He would just need to compile same thing for RPi.
I don't think you need mc2xml, doesn't SD have a xml feed that you could download with curl or wget?

Thank you - this is interesting. I haven't run a python script before... I'm currently getting the following when trying to run jsontv:

As there is very little documentation for this script...I'm not exactly sure what is wrong. I appreciate any insight someone may have!

Frankly the more I look into this the more inclined I am to think you are better to run either mc2xml out xmltv on another computer and transfer the file to LE.
mc2xml has an arm version, but last I heard was that it was only available if you contact the author of mc2xml directly (and maybe donate/pay for it?).
I'm looking into this myself on behalf of WeTek. If I have any success I will try to leave a note here about it.
I just saw a post on kodi forums saying a user had success with zap2xml - off to google that now.

OK the kodi forums user pointed me to this OpenELEC Mediacenter - OpenELEC Forum - ATSC, Tvheadend and Zap2xml (1/2) - he uses ActivePerl to then use zap2xml
All credit due to Robca, and it is untested by me!
One option would be to run perl with zap2xml in docker.
I found an alternative script - and kodi addon - that works to generate an xmltv file from schedules direct. This runs on both my raspberrry pi and an amlogic box with OE installed.
