Upgrading RPi from 8.2.5 to 9.0.1

I just discovered that v9.0.1 was released. Is there an upgrade path, or is this a fresh install of the new version?

I guess I should mention that I am using RPi2 and RPi3 devices.

Okay. I've done that for updates, e.g. 8.x to 8.x.x, and the update was in a tarball. I didn't know that would work for an image file.
