I am not understanding which release to use for the s912.
could you kindly tell me which one to use? possibly with automatic updates

You have two choices:
- LE 9 Balbes (no automatic updates, maybe I'm wrong?)
- CoreELEC (with automatic updates).
Backup LE 8, fresh install with which option you decide and restore setttings after.

If you are wanting stable usable install for S912 device. I would for the moment (from experience with Khadas Vim2 device) suggest coreELEC 9.x
