Cherry Trail HDMI Audio OUT on OpenELEC - Z8300

Good Evening all,

Noob here, loved Openelec and am sure moving forward that I will feel the same way about LibreELEC.
Thanks to all the contributors for all your hard work.

Saw this today:
Audio over HDMI comes to Intel Cherry Trail PCs running Linux - Liliputing

They demonstrate HDMI Audio out on a Cherry Trail Z8300 SOC working on OpenELEC.

"Intel’s Pierre-Louis Bossart delivered a few patches in March, and CNX-Software notes that they seem to work with operating systems such as OpenELEC (which is a light-weight Linux distribution designed to run Kodi media center)."

Unfortunately the OpenELEC image provided is only half working but does demonstrate the HDMI out functionality in AUDIO OUT. You cannot actually configure SAMBA / SSH etc in that image as you cannot gain access to the OS etc. So not for day to day use.

I am currently running a NUC i5 which is very stable but would not mind replace it with a Cherry Trail Z8300 PC with LibreELEC on it. And they are cheap enough that I can give them as gifts with LibreELEC preloaded.

How long would it take before the above changes for HDMI Audio is incorporated into LibreELEC?

Is there perhaps an easy guide for me to compile LibreELEC and upgrade and patch the Kernel?

OpenELEC has incorporated the patch already:

You might want to open an issue on github I'm sure they would be interested to add it as well.

I've already looked at it, however we are on linux 4.6 and the commits need to be rebased. We will hopefully add it for LibreELEC 8.0

I checked, the patch applies fine to 4.6 rc6. Just ordered a Wintel Pro, will be testing this From what I understand, HD audio is not possible but passthrough DTS/AC3 might be later on.

I just looked again and it seems that the branch here Commits · plbossart/sound · GitHub is base on 4.6-rc3 however it contains many commits that we don't want, so even though this may apply it isn't what we need.

I just installed v7.90.002 on my z8300 Intel Compute Stick, and HDMI audio is working great. Glad to see you guys are on top of this. I've been waiting for a linux release of some sort since I got it. Windows 10 is fine, but way too bulky for running a Kodi box. Thank you for all of your hard work.

Did you apply the patch yourself or was it already applied for the generic 002 alpha build? Have you tried the 003 build? If so would you be able to provide either of the img/tar?

I have tried the recent 004 alpha build and it seems to not have the audio patch applied to the kernal? Was it removed?

It was removed when the kernel was updated to 4.7 as there was no existing patch at that point. The patch has been updated recently so will probably be back in the next alpha version. I've added it in my latest community build, if you would like to test.

escalade .. can you PR that patch please, the sooner it goes back into alpha builds the better
