Is there an easy way to do this upgrade or do I have to wipe out my memory card and start from scratch?
Thanks!

Thanks!
I have used the LibreELEC update functionality and it was very easy
If a solution is still needed....we have a wiki for that:
Upgrading my Rpi3 from 8.2.5 to 9, results in some meshed up settings pages for me.
See example here
This happens either if i upgrade from inside the LibreElec menu, or if i do a clean install and then restore a 8.2.5 backup (backup taken using the LibreElec menu)
My setup is mostly vanilla: official Estuary skin with a few add-ons (YouTube, twitch, trakt)
Is there some file i can skip restoring from the backup to avoid this?
No idea what the issue is, but the backup is just a tar archive so it can be extracted to a local folder and you can manually move back the important bits instead of the whole file.
I noticed that the screen resolution changed on all of my 3 upgrades (RPi 2 and 3) after upgrade (to something really low). And the code in Kodi 18 behind displaying settings has been regressed somewhat. I just accepted that I had a spot of reconfiguring to do after the upgrade...and any way it was way less painful than starting again.

That's what i was thinking, but i don't know where to start.
Any specific folder that might be conflicting with v18 settings menu? (cache, config or Kodi)
You can could temporarily rename the userdata/guisettings.xml file to something else, and restart LibreELEC so a clean xml file is generated.
Thanks for the suggestion, i did some tests but unfortunately that didn't do the trick.
Here are the different versions of the guisettings.xml file:
