I did a clean install of 8.0.2 on my Wetek Play2 when it came out and its running fine.
I would like to upgrade to 8.2.1 and was wondering if there is a way to do this without doing a clean install.

Yes. Try first read faq about update process and then everything will be much easier for You. Just copy .tar file with new libreelec to .update folder and reboot your box. Should be updated without losing anything
The wiki might also be a good start for reading
FYI.. 8.2.0 is the current official release, not 8.2.1 (which doesn't exit) or 8.2.0.1 (which is pi hardware only)
Thanks for all your help, I will have a go tonight
Will I have to redo all the links to the files on my NAS box etc or will they be ok
The sources you added will be migrated during the update as well as the database will be migrated as well. So generally there's nothing you have to worry about ;).
But as always...backups won't hurt. If you want to be sure, just backup your userdata folder to somewhere else.
