OK, but IMHO as normal end user after +3 years the word "new" sounds a bit wrong.

In HW world (NW, SAN, CPU, ...) that's ages...

Again, no offence, just reacting to that a +3 year old project is still called new.

Well, that sounds a bit like "hit or miss"...

This might work is not so funny when away from home and Your Rpi shows... Nothing.

The setup was working well with Rpi3/LE9.2 I'm curious why the setup is so unreliable as it is now.

Is behavior same if You do a clean install on a spare SD-card?

I'm gonna replace my old-ish Raspi 3B that I had with me whilst travelling around with new Raspberry Pi 4 .

With 9.2.8 it has been working quite well on Rpi3 on most hotels, both within US/South America and across Europe/Africa.

So, with all issues with Rpi4 running 10.0.x having problems detecting different TV resolutions (no signal message) forcing some obscure workarounds with SSH sessions/commands or editing various text files (yepp, year 2022 that is still required? )

I'm wondering if it's safer to stick with 9.2.8 or has 10.0.x matured enough to handle various TV resolutions out of the box without all that hassle as a stable travel companion?

Could You try to burn the image to SD card with Rufus? (Rufus link) There is a portable version available!

It overwrites existing partitions if the SD card hasn't failed.

LE boots just fine from USB 3 attached disk.

I had similar issues with some of my USB 3 - SATA adapters.

Some worked fine with Raspberry OS but refused to start with LE.

Another adapter (same brand) works just fine with both...

Just to mention:

I bought few different, both cheap-ish and some others from both Amazon and from AliExpress with very different results:

All images written with 'Rufus'.

Some 'no-name' adapters only works for storage, not for boot at all or just act very weirdly.

Something *is* different in 10.0.1 compared to 10.0 for sure.

10.0 starts and runs without any issues but 10.0.1 ends up and stays with a black screen...

Same cables, same TV, same setup.
