Kodi (and every other consumer software audio player) cannot decode Dolby Atmos to more than 7.1 and cannot place Atmos objects in their mixed locations in 3D space. This is also true for DTS:X. The only way to decode Atmos and DTS:X correctly is via HDMI pass-through to an AVR or AV Processor with an Atmos or DTS:X decoder onboard.

This is great news! Linux 5.12 onwards will support Intel Kaby Lake graphics through to current. My NUC8i3 should be ok. I can now replace my NUC5i3.

The burning question: When will we see LPSCON HDR support in an official LibreElec release? LibreElec 11, I guess ?

I’ll definitely try one of the unofficial patched LibreElec 10 versions with HDR in coming days. Running Win10 and Kodi 19 on my NUC8 is horrible!

I saw a post (can’t find it now) saying Matrix will be released without HDR support. HDR will be added not too far after that apparently. Reason was to get Matrix out earlier, so add-on developers need support Python 3 earlier.

My new NVME SSD for testing arrives tomorrow. I doubt HDR is supported just yet. Kodi 19 release probably still months away.

The Milhouse Matrix (Kodi 19) LE alpha builds with Linux 5.3 have just started. I’ve ordered a new NVME SSD especially for testing these builds on my NUC8i3BEH. I’ll leave my current LE 9.2 SSD untouched so I have a fully working Kodi 18.4.

You can update an existing install from the .img.gz file (just like .tar)

LibreElec on NUCs does not yet support HDR output. It currently uses tone mapping to display HDR as SDR, so it looks correct albeit without full 10bit colour/contrast range.

Last night I played about 15 minutes of two HD movies with no video issues. No issues at all.

I’ve been using LE9.2 on my old NUC (i3) for a few days with no issues, although I’ve only played multichannel music and music videos (mostly HD videos with DTS-HDMA, TrueHD and Atmos).

The official LibreElec 9.0.2 build (with Kodi 18.2) uses 4.19 kernel and works perfectly with my Intel NUC8i3BEK with HDMI Passthrough. Last Milhouse build with 14.19 also works perfectly (I think it’s build 311 from memory). Build with 5.0 kernel are bad for audio Passthrough.

Don’t forget to set Kodi to sync TV to Source otherwise audio Passthrough will fail.

I have NUC8 -> HDMI -> Denon AVR X7200WA -> HDMI -> Sony 4K TV (2018)

The later Milhouse LibreElec 9 for Kodi 18.2 (Generic) test builds using Linux 5 have ALSA problems on NUCs (no Passthrough Audio). I’m hoping this will resolved with official LibreElec 9.0.2 build.

I’ve had to stay with last Milhouse LE build using Linux 4.19 to use Passthrough.

The LibreElec 9.0.1 MR release file does not exists when attempting to download:

libreelec-wetek_hub.arm-9.0.1.img.gz

Is the link wrong or file just missing?

It looks like it’s a few months away based on an email thread by Linux devs I found in a Google search recently. They were still discussing HDR implementation design early this month.

Best video quality is 1:1 pixel mapping without size calibration in Kodi. Using ‘Just Scan’ on LGs or ‘Full screen’ on Sonys removes the screen overscan and gives 1:1 pixel mapping. Size calibration will never give perfect digital video.
