Upgrading from Wetek Play - which hardware/device?

  • Hello

I currently own a Wektek Play, and am ready to upgrade to a faster device/hardware. I don't really need 4K, but definitely 1080p HD.

I'm wondering about which hardware or device to use. Libreelec should be:

    - easy to install, update & stable (so want to use the official images/downloads, rather than rely on a community build)

    - fast boot up

    - not laggy when in use

    - reliable hardware

    Some options I've been considering:

    - Wetek Core

    - Asus Chromebook

    - Intel NUC (braswell for 1080p; or more expensive i3 based)

    - Build my own NUC/mini-ITX type device

    Any advice will be appreciated

    Thanks

A Raspberry Pi 3 does 1080p just fine, is probably the most stable build out there (if you don't install any shady addons), boot time is not really applicable since it's always on, and not laggy afaict. An extensive music collection can be a problem, though.

Something faster than a Wetek Play? Other devices won't play videos any faster. ;)

If you still plan to use a 1080p TV for the time being, any Intel box will be fine. I can still use my 4-5 year old Ivybridge Celeron 1037UN for that with no problem.

  • Speed wise (more ... more speed)

    RPi3 < WeTek Play < .. < WeTek Play 2 / Odroid_C2 / WeTek Hub < ........ < some Intel j3455/J4205 board

WP2/WH/Odroid and Intel can also play HEVC and 4k, not that you need it but they are overall much faster the a RPi.

Thanks! I've been running around in circles thinking about different h/w, esp self-build. But I think it's simpler just getting hold of a Wetek Hub (esp in terms of cost)
