Is there a way to use LibreELEC 8 and update the Kodi to a nightly (currently 18.x) version?
I have heavy but unsystematic problems with "connection timeouts" using samba shares.

I would suggest building LE master which is LE9. It's possible to use Kodi 18 in LE8 but you need to rebase patches and backport/bump some packages required by Kodi 18.
Building myself? Sounds heavy. Does an img-file comes out at the end then?
Which build palttform would you suggest (using LibreELEC on a Pi2)? Can I build this on a x86_64 with Debian unstable, too?
I'd suggest trying Millhouse builds - there's a huge thread in the pi section of the kodi forum.

same answer as at hte nerds smb1 is kind of broken and smb1 is all Kodi can handle -> switch to nfs and it should work

I might be completely wrong - probably am - but I was under the impression this addressed smb versions.

yes but still not merged and this would also only affect Kodi18

It's in the latest Millhouse builds. And the OP is about using v18.

yes it is in that builds, afaik nowhere else

Am I missing something here?
What's wrong with trying a Millhouse build then?
I've re-read the op several times, and I can't see why that's not the obvious thing to try,,..?

switch to a highly unstable build where "all" addons are broken isn't really an option
(also the same thread is at kodinerds with "different" infos)

We must use different addons.
