[S905/S905X] LE 7.0.x Boot issue test images

  • In this topic I will post test images to test booting issue that some of you experience on S905 boxes with my 7.0.3.010 and 7.0.3.011 builds.

The images posted here will be based on my libreelec-7.0 branch and additionally I will be reverting some kernel patches for testing purposes. The builds will be 32-bit userspace only.

    How to use:

    • if you update from 7.0.3.010 or 7.0.3.011, simply put the downloaded image in Update folder
    • if you update from an earlier build, use a device tree that is listed in 7.0.3.011 thread
    • for fresh installations, use a device tree from 7.0.3.011 build

Workaround for the issue offered in 7.0.3.012.

  • I've got booting issues with your 7.90.x alpha builds.

I've observed that maybe it has something to do with external USB drive. In case when box fails to boot it hangs just before mounting external HDD. I can tell you that because I can feel and hear when it starts to spin during normal boot.

  • karolgarlicki I use the same kernel version and config in my Krypton builds but I'm posting Jarvis builds as more people are using them. As soon as we discover a fix here, I'll update Krypton build with a patch.

  • Nexbox A95X S905 1GB/8GB

    Box using LAN

    Random Freezing on Reboots

  • kszaq, the version you pulled off from the server is a little better. The latest version failed on the first reboot on fresh install from mSD, i.e. after resize Ext4 partition and reboot. Reboot had never been successful without shutdown my AVR and perform a power up reboot. FYI, I connect HDMI to my AV receiver and kept ethernet connected all the time. I usually deactivate Wireless connection during the 1st setup and I already turn CEC off but boot issues remained.

My box is M18 (S905 2G/16G using device tree gxbb_p200_2G_1Gbit_OTG_Port.dtb). I checked 'Hardware Information' page under the 'System Info' tab, processor revision is 020b and can read the processor temperature with this test build.

  • Boot issues still very evident with Mini MX-G

Interestingly (at least for those that boot from USB), I observe that if a bootable USB is inserted AS WELL as a bootable SD, the device boots from USB without the normal long pause (almost instantly).

    EDIT:
All you need on the SD card are kernel.img and dtb.img and the box boots 12+ seconds faster :)

It's not a bug, it's a feature. ;) The reason you are seeing long boot times is that it takes a few seconds for u-boot to initialize USB. The speedup you are suggesting will work properly when you have an SD card without LE and kernel.img + dtb.img in root folder. This is because on init the system looks for "BOOT/LIBREELEC" and "DISK" partitions and that's where it loads system and user data from. So if you put a non-LE SD card (simply put: format it clean in Rufus first) with image files and you have LE USB at the same time, the system will boot faster. But you have to remember to update kernel image and device tree on that SD card manually every time. :exclamation: Because of this please keep this trick for yourself and don't advertise it. ;)

@all Thank you for testing the first image. OP updated with a second build to test.

  • kszaq, did I do something wrong? The 2nd test image even failed on the 1st boot, i.e. it can't resize the ext4 partition, create directories and copy the file it need to the ext4 partition. For boot issues before, this step could definitely be completed.

UPDATE: My bad, I copied the wrong dtb.img (use gxl instead of gxbb), will test again now.

UPDATE2: Even with the correct dtg.img and no matter how hard I tried, the box just hang in the boot ('Google TV') logo. I put the mSD card in a Mini MX (no boot issues), it hang at the bear boot logo.

  • latest test build works fine, though not from internal.
    S905, 1GB, 100Mbit.
.10 and .11 almost never booted up - this build 10 of 10 times so far.

Edit: WTF lol - the build before latest build was the one I ment - you are to fast kszaq :)
    Will test this build now
    [hr]
Ok - boot problems are back with this build - doesn`t work here.

  • I`m sorry - just posting my observations.
gc3e054b booted fine and fast. Not from internal, but sd card works fine.
g5207357 does not work well for me. out of ~10 cycles 2 booted fine.

Will test some more tomorrow - it`s pretty late and I`m extremely tired, sorry
