Smartphone portrait mode video clips incorrectly shown

  • When I watch video clips taken with my Samsung Galaxy S24 they play back correctly when recorded in landscape
mode but the content is 90 degrees off when recorded in portrait mode. The shape of the video is correct
(16 by 9 portrait) but the content is turned 90 degrees anti clockwise.

If I change the settings for the video from "metadata" to "90 degrees", the shape becomes landscape so it
matches the turned content but this does not make me much happier. I have tried various video settings
    without luck.

This does NOT happen with Kodi on my ChromeCast 4K. On it, both portrait and landscape videos play back perfectly.

Is there still a setting I have missed?

  • What LE device are you playing the videos on?

I use the generic installation image for 12.2 from the SD card maker tool on an RPI 5 connected to a Samsung TV.

If it did not work perfectly on Kodi Omega on my ChromeCast I would have blamed my phone for producing
bad meta data but this does not seem to be the case.

  • The RPi hardware doesn't support 90°/270° rotation of video planes.

As mentioned in the github discussion you can change the render mode to "EGL" as a workaround - but keep in mind that this has lower performance than the default "direct to plane" renderer.

    so long,
