Android TV Experiences with Kodi

  • Longtime Kodi user here. Used on Windows, Linux and now LibreElec for a while. I recently moved and was forced into getting a whole new setup. I ended getting a Roku TV without fulling knowing if or how I was going to be able incorporate my Kodi media center in there or not. Luckily I was able to get it going rather quickly and I'm using it but not with the same frequency I was prior as the rest of the family now prefers the Roku. I recently noticed that you can run Kodi thought the Android App store on your Android TV itself. I'm wondering if anyone know or can share what that experience is like compared to running LibreElec on its own hardware?

    Thank you!

  • I recently purchased a Sony - 55" Class X80K and it runs on the Google TV Platform. I installed Kodi and although it works, there are many limitations in both audio and video. You should give it a try.

  • Kodi on Android has massively improved in recent years, driven by Kodi forcing and adopting Google standards, and this reflects in general usage stats (Team Kodi doesn't track active installs, but we see download volumes and forum traffic). The weak link is thus the underlying Android kernel codebase for any particular vendor and/or device combination, and how it implements or ignores those standards. If the device follows standards, Kodi runs well. If it includes lots of hacks to make specific apps (that don't follow standards) work better, that often degrades the experience of other apps. TL/DR: there's not really an answer, but you can install and try for $free.
