LibreELEC RPi4 9.95.2 does not reproduce .ASS subtitles

Subtitles in .ass format are not reproduced either in a separate file or embedded in a video container. The subtitles are detected but they are not displayed on the screen.

Using a fresh installation of this image LibreELEC-RPi4.arm-9.95.2.img.gz

Reproducing the videos in 3840x2160x24Hz (not sure if it matters)

That sounds more like a generic Kodi problem, not a LibreELEC only problem.

Can you share the .ASS file(s) ?

Sure, I attach the file. With the 9.26 version I didn't have the issue. I am playing mostly 1080p H264 content and with SRT it works fine. Thanks

It doesn't seem to be a kodi problem.

Kodi 19 shows .ass subs on my windows pc and on my android phone.

It doesn't show the subs only on my raspi4 on libreelec 9.95.1 and 9.95.2

I can confirm that this also doesn't work in LibreElec 9.97.1 on an RPi4. Several x265 files with embedded .ass subs didn't show any subs, even though the subs were recognized. Switching to EGL rendering only shows the subs, not the video (black screen). Disabling PRIME rendering does give correct subs, although the CPU had some trouble keeping up.

The same files played fine on LibreElec 9.2.6.

I could reproduce the issue, that seems to be a bug in kodi: ASS subtitles not shown on gbm if GUI resolution limit is active · Issue #20085 · xbmc/xbmc · GitHub

When playing HD (or lower res) videos make sure your whitelist is set up correctly and enable "Adjust refresh rate" in player settings - so kodi outputs in HD (or lower), then ASS subs are shown.

For 4k video output the only workaround for now is to disable the GUI resolution limit (which will give rather poor GUI performance though) or to limit output to HD.

Hello Hias,

thank you very much for the solution, it fixed the problem.

Enabling "Adjust refresh rate" seems to even have removed some minor stuttering I noticed in some video's, which I always assumed were caused by the RPi's hardware being limited, or my network drive. So, two birds with one stone

I finally managed to find and fix the root cause, with this build ASS subs area also shown fine for 4k movies here.
