I am thinking I'm going to put together a Raspberry Pi 4 with libreelec for my parents. I'm looking for suggestions on an input device that has very good reliability and is simple. I won't be able to run over to their house to fix stuff if something goes wrong.
Input suggestion?

Most people prefer to use the TV remote control in combination with CEC. Then the TV will transmit RC signals over HDMI cable to the RPi. On the TV side it may be necessary to activate CEC at first. On the RPi side it's activated by default.
Try to find the CEC settings on the TV. Sometimes CEC has different names, like "Viera Link" for Panasonic etc. That's the most comfortable solution for your parents.

Ok. I guess I need 2nd option. They have a monitor, not a real tv. I don't think it has a CEC option.

I use a Logitech Harmony 650 / 665 Remote & a Logitech K400 Wireless Keyboard to input text. Both are plug & play on my Intel NUC's running Libreelec.

MCE remotes work fine, too. Maybe you already have one of those, because some notebooks had it as a package goody.
