Can't Upgrade from OpenElec

  • I've just spent my entire Saturday trying to upgrade from OpenElec to LibreElec.

I have backed up all my settings and so far I have tried:

Downloaded the generic version for my Self-build HTPC, I then transferred the file to the upgrade folder, rebooted but nothing was recognised and update did not begin.

I then created a USB Installer on multiple USB discs but each time no upgrade begins. I select the relevant boot device but no update starts, it just reboots and gives me the device selection option again.

Any ideas of how I can overcome this?

  • The only update file type that OpenELEC recognizes is a .tar file.
Alternatively, you can manually copy the 4 system files into the system partition during a Linux Live session of f.e. Ubuntu.

Depending on your version of OpenELEC, your system partition may be too small. The best solution then is to do a fresh installation of LibreELEC, and then restore the OE backup.

Creating a USB installer will not upgrade any build of OE or LE.

  • I too have spent most of the day trying to go from OpenElec to LibreElec without success.

Copied the tar file over, rebooted and just got a screen full of colour. Red, yellow, blue and green.

    Tried the SD-Creator same result.

    Added boot_delay = 1 in config.txt, same result.

Using a Raspberry Pi model 2.

Any idea why I just have a screen full of colours and no boot up?
