Looks like I am staying on 16.4.2 and android.
There is just no way to keep my "alarm while kodi continues to play" feature that works perfectly under this combination.
I have experimented with both demetris and bables150 versions for the s812.
There appear to be 2 devices listed but both devices sound out on both the HDMI and TOSLINK at the same time, there is no way to turn off the HDMI and when I aplay to one of the devices, it either says device busy or halts KODI from playing.
I would need both the alsa DMIX addon and a better control of the device output before I can use Libreelec. Maybe I should try experimenting with Alexelec but I suspect I would run into the same things.

This works great as designed for my living room Tronsmart MXIII-plus.
But I may need to keep SPMC 16.4.2 around on my bedroom setup for a number of reasons mostly dealing with an unorthodox sound setup.
First off, is it possible to SPECIFICALLY TURN ON the TOSLINK output of the device and TURN OFF the HDMI sound.
If I do not specifically TURN OFF the HDMI sound, because of the way I have things setup, I will get a double "echo" sound on everything.
Second, (I know I have asked this before) I know that Libreelec uses a custom linux kernel with alsa sound. (I am fairly familiar with fedora and other linux's) Is it possible that KODI is setup to use alsa DMIX? If that is the case, then it should be possible to play a sound using aplay (which is part of the alsa pacakage) and not interfere with a playing sound stream from KODI. I am interested in using cron+aplay to setup an alarm sound, that does not interfere with a playing stream on KODI. (both sounds going at the same time). Otherwise, I wonder if there would be a way to send a raw sound directly to a /dev device. (I am not sure if this would interfere with KODI or not though.
My current setup in my bedroom, has the toslink of the tv and the toslink of the Tronsmart running through converter boxes to a mini mixer. The reason I have it setup this way is that no matter what device I am using, an alarm (set using the standard android clock) will sound. If I update SPMC to anything past 16.4.2, then SPMC starts using the latest sound API on android thus making it stop when an alarm kicks in. (I am assuming that krypton will cause me the same problem). This is why I am exploring different options to get around this.
I am asking here because this is supposedly "official" unofficial build for S812's
What is making me doubt I can use the toslink device at all is...
CodeLibreELEC:~ # aplay --list-devices **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: AMLM8AUDIO [AML-M8AUDIO], device 0: AML PCM dummy_codec-0 Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: AMLM8AUDIO [AML-M8AUDIO], device 1: SPDIF PCM dit-hifi-1 Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Nobody?
Heck if you want to avoid spamming the topic, feel free to PM me.
I'm just a bit hesitant because I'm afraid I might have it setup wrong and wind up wiping out android or even bricking the device.

Just want to make sure I don't overwrite android.
My TV box is a Tronsmart MXIII-PLUS S812.
I DLed from https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=170774
LibreELEC-S8X2.arm-8.0.1-MXIII-PLUS.img.gz
I uncompressed it using 7zip.
I have burned this using Win32Image to a case10 SD using Win32Image.
Before I try this I just want to make sure I have it setup right.
Should I use the toothpick method at this point?
Sorry if this is asked ad-infinitum.

I guess I am out of luck, other than to ask for a feature of adding a CLI sound player that will use pulseaudio into the distribution?
I am pretty sure pulseaudio does not have its own packaged CLI sound player, unless there is some way of routing raw sound data to a device directly.

I should have added that if aplay is not an option is there some other sound playing CLI that is part of the standard libreelec distribution? Maybe mpg123 or ogg123?

No one has an answer for my first question, which is the one I was most interested in?

First let me give the reason I am even considering using Libreelec.
The last version of kodi to NOT use the most recent android sound library is SPMC 16.4.2 and I am sort of stuck, using that version.
By using the latest sound library, they have made it so that if I am streaming online radio and the android alarm kicks in, instead of the 2 sounds playing at the same time, kodi halts play of the stream.
My first question is, the only way I can think of to get around this is to run libreelec and setup a cron to aplay for the alarm.
Will a kodi stream continue to play if an aplay kicks in?

My second question is about audio outputs. I have 2 android TV box setups with the same model TV box. Both have the usual HDMI sound output to the TV and both have an optical SPDIF output port.On one box, I want to use the HDMI as usual, but the other I want the HDMI turned off and only the optical SPDIF to be running. (the HDMI can not be outputting sound at all.)
Can I do this?

My last question is, I am currently using a android control app on a tablet to control these android TV boxes, but I must admit I never used these TV boxes for anything but kodi.Does the libreelec kodi respond to kodi's own "kore" which would be a perfect solution?

Last thing is, thanks for putting up with newb questions.
