You can try CoreELEC for the S905 device. They should have a more recent version of Kodi available.
Currently LibreELEC is taking a different approach towards a more unified solution that will include the Android box devices, which should benefit us in the long run.

2020-10-21 00:57:20.486 T:3011516896 NOTICE: Disabled debug logging due to GUI setting. Level 0.
Unfortunately you have not yet enabled 'Debugging' in Kodi, with which a more detailed log file is created.
So please enable debugging, restart LibreELEC, play the problem video, and provide a new log file.

I'd have to double-check it, but normally you wouldn't remove a NAS source as it is "the" source for your media files.
Also, a NAS is typically running 24/7 in order to access it at all times. Shutting it down makes it act like any USB drive you unplug from your computer. Sure, Kodi will complain that the media files are no longer available.
You'll need to think ahead before you setup your media files. Kodi doesn't like them being moved around, as the full path of every video file is stored in the database. Right now, there are also no easy tools to support the change of media file locations. Which is perhaps to blame on Kodi, but it is what it is.

now k0di complains qbout not being able tomdonnect to the
Are you having problems keeping your keyboard in line?
How did you remove the source from Kodi? Because manually editing sources.xml is not the correct way as the source references will remain the video database.

What is "the latest"..? Latest stable release, or the latest nightly test build?
Also what exactly happens when selecting the power menu?
Include a log file for reference.

I'd suggest X-Plore File Manager. Pretty useful and no ads.

Two possible reasons:
- Kodi's scraper had a mishap that may have a Kodi core reason. Thus, thumbnail addresses via http2 weren't working. A couple of bandaids have been applied and fanart retrieval seems to be working for now.
- TMDB has done quite a spring cleaning some time ago, so some fanart/thumbs is no longer available.

I'd wait for the new Chromebooks with an update expiry till 2029 as promised by Google.

"Least expensive.." A RPi-4b 2gb, I guess.
But there is also the wisdom of "cheap is expensive" .

Is there an "earlier" LibreELEC version I could use
You can always try a downgrade, just know that the scraper version may be auto-updated. It's a case of trial and error for now.

LE - device is LibreElec device (v9.2.5)
Yeah, I already figured that. I'm just wondering what hardware you were using.
In case you installed LibreELEC onto your new Samsung refrigerator or on the latest Philips coffeemaker.
FYI, we do not have a crystal ball here. -
Please use pastebin websites for providing log files and other longer outputs. We prefer to keep our forum server clean and lean.
As it's not really my department, the nightly problem is to be looked at by a LibreELEC developer.

is it worth doing that?
That depends on which type of RPi you are attempting this.
For a RPi 2/3, it won't make much of a difference speedwise.
RPi4 has USB3.0 support so that can make quite a difference.
The RPI 3B+ and 4B can also boot directly from USB, if that helps.

I read the other day that Google will set the automatic update for certain new (business?) Chromebooks to 2029.
That won't be of any help for your old Asus, but at least some longer lasting support is now becoming a thing for Chromebooks.

It's a bug that came up a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, it's likely a bug that goes deeper into Kodi core,
and so team Kodi is considering a 18.9 release. Which could stir up things for a LibreELEC 9.2.6 release...
But we're not all there yet. -
I was hoping some of the others would also step in (because I'm not a dev or a graphics guru), but I guess it's still hard to point at what is the real problem.
There are some audio/video sync hiccups, but I don't know if those are the ones in the short 1-2 min video, if those are part of the fastforwarding.
Are you also sure that the video itself isn't the problem?

What exactly is your "LE device"?
Is your NAS powered on 24/7, or do you shut it down every night?
Does the NAS have a fixed IP address in your network setup?
How are you connecting to the NAS? Which protocol?
