I had this readonly issue with some of my sd cards, after only 2-3 times of LE image writing, including new ones. Also the fact that more than one sd card (or usb stick) was affected in a very short period makes the "random pot luck" a bit too unbelievable. But undeniable proof of the LE creator, or something Linux is responsible for the readonly lockups, is something I don't have.

For simple installation and usage, using an SD card only is enough.

But most SD cards / USB sticks have a relative short life span. Sooner or later they will fail. There are SD cards designed for video surveillance and dashcams that have a longer/better 'quality of life' as the higher number of disk writes. They cost more as well, of course.

One installation option for the long term would be to attach a SSD to your RPi and run LibreELEC from that. AFAIK, you should be able to boot the RPi from a USB device now with the latest firmwares. But an SSD is also in a different price category than a SD card is. The SSD is also faster in terms of write speed.

That board supports HEVC and 10 bit. It does not do HDR, though.
10bit support for Linux is planned in Kodi 18 (Leia).
There are a couple of test builds floating around in the LE community, nothing officially stable yet.

    I'm running 8.0.1c on my K.hadas Vim (2GB/16GB) box.

Yesterday you violated our forum rules again. And today you started to rewrite your product's name in our forum.

We have been quite clear how LibreELEC operates towards your product.
Another attempt of advertising your beloved 2GB/16GB box will have all your messages and forum account purged.
    Three strikes and you're out.

It's not difficult to understand at all, really.
That 'super'repository is basically in the Top-3 of Kodi's Banned repositories for making Kodi's life miserable.
I'm sure the HD-Idle add-on can be found elsewhere as well.

FYI, there has been a Backup/Restore tool in LibreELEC (and OpenELEC) for quite some time. It simply beats copying folders/files by hand. It's also much more userfriendly to the people new to Linux systems. Not to mention that you forgot to copy the .config and the .cache folders if you really want to make a decent backup.

Re-installing LibreELEC/OpenELEC as a application and rescanning your video/music collection are two different things. The former is done pretty quickly (along with a backup of a good-running setup), the latter does not have to take that much time. Using a MySQL database on your file server unloads a Raspberry Pi from slow local database disk writes. Not to mention it prevents a lot of wear and tear on the RPi's sd card.

A little RPi machine usually boots in under a minute. A 5-10 minute reboot either indicates you're using a sluggish class 4 SD card, or a shitload of repositories and add-ons have been installed. I'll refrain from asking further questions about those this time.

Again, no matter which shader you will use, HEVC 10bit is NOT hw-acceleration supported by your GPU. That video format requires a dedicated GPU capable of h.265 & 10-bit video decoding. Your NUC does not meet that requirement. You will need dedicated hardware to view videos in that format.

So, LibreELEC works great and OpenELEC fails. And now you are going to wait until OpenELEC fixes stuff that should have been working in the first place. Just like a whole bunch of other stuff that the OpenELEC developer (there is no 'they' nor a dev team in OE anymore) didn't bother to test at all before the grand 8.0 release. Hence the 2nd (un)necessary update that OE requires within just a couple of weeks.

Sure. Whatever you want, mate. :)

Did you get an icon in the top right corner of the screen?
    If not, it's not overheating.

Ventilation holes and heatsinks does not equal to ventilation. You will need some form of active airflow via a (small) fan.
Same as with external HDDs overheating in their cases.
