The first big question here is .. how old is the laptop? Which graphics card is being used, and igp or discrete?

Installing LibreELEC on a x86 device is a 2-step process.

First you create the installer by writing the Generic LibreELEC image onto a USB-stick (or SDcard if supported by the laptop).

The booted installer will then install LibreELEC onto your laptop's HDD/SSD.

Type 'install' during the waiting period of the installer. Ony pressing ENTER will get you into Live Mode.

5Ghz works quite well on the RPi4, having to enter different credentials for 2.4ghz and 5ghz is new to me.

There is the Samba min & max version setting in Kodi, and there is the Samba section in LibreELEC's Settings Add-on, for SMB server purposes. No need to poke in the guisettings.xml file itself.

Wifi on the RPi4 is not bad, but due the small size of the antenna not that optimized for longer distances. I have my RPi4 in a Flirc box and on the other side of a wall from an TP-Link access point, and I still get a decent 5Ghz (966Mbps) connection, with approx 45MBps. The total distance between them though is only some 50cm.

Doublecheck if using/fixating a different channel on your Cisco device may improve the situation with less interference from other devices.

Powerline adapter results can be just as bad as those of wifi, but that all depends on the overall state of your house's wiring quality. There is no guarantee of any connection speed up front... Well, h265 does have its perks. I converted almost my entire collection to h265, mainly for its smaller file sizes. Converting h264 videos to HEVC will compress them from 40 to 90%, depending on the source video quality. I typically not only save 70% on average in size, but I also enhance the video when converting if needed. Say, cranking up the gamma, brightness, color and/or contrast a bit, and sharpen the video a bit.

Such old hardware is totally unfit to decode h265 videos. The h264 video is relatively easy to process, for CPU and GPU alike. The H265/HEVC format requires much more "oomph", so unless you find slide shows amusing to watch, it's best to keep h265 videos away from that laptop.

All your other OSes and your small SMB file server may still use the insecure SMBv1, while Kodi 19+/LibreELEC 9 defaults to SMBv2.

Check the min & max SMB version settings in the Kodi GUI, and possibly the SMB settings in the Settings Add-on.

NFS mounts are a different beast altogether, but both NFS and SMB depend on user rights.

What are the NFS /etc/exports settings, the NFS user can still conflict with the default/current Ubuntu user as far as file rights go.

Does a crash of your RPi3 also happen when you use Kore on your smartphone as a remote keyboard to Kodi?

Not all htpc hardware provides the same access/possibilities to adjust certain image properties in Kodi. If that is the case, your TV's adjustments will help you out.

Only for Raspberry Pi 4 (and 400?) devices are firmware updates supported.

You could try setting up an empty alias for 'sudo'

alias sudo=""

and place it in a file called .bash_aliases in the root of the /storage folder.

And then restart LibreELEC.
