All MECOOL M8S Pro+ users eyes forward and pay attention:

The majority of faulty eMMC Storage chips and boards seem to be stamped KLMAG1JENB - B041

If your box is exhibiting freezing and crashing it is going to be useless going forward. You have a box with faulty hardware.

Once the eMMC storage bootloader area fails then no more LibreELEC. Forget about even trying to fix it.

Follow these links and seek a refund from the seller if purchased from Geekbuying (click) or Gearbest (click)

This is the thread you should refer Geekbuying or Gearbest to when talking about Frozen M8S Pro+ boxes:

    M8S Pro+ Freaktab thread

I would not even mention LibreELEC. These faulty boxes are dying simply by doing a regular OTA Android Firmware Update.

The more times you re-flash the worse the problem seems to get.

So what I want to know is whether I'm simply asking too much of my little H96 Pro+ to run both the back end and the front end, or should this be achievable? From reading around, people seem to be running back end and front end software on the Raspberry Pi. Or is this a software problem - and if so, is it in this version of LibreElec or in the version of Tvheadend?

No sure about any patches, but generally...

You are asking too much of a AMLogic device running an old v3.14 Linux Kernel, which even when Media Build, more modern Linux Kernel DVB modules are backported into it, still has no guarantees of complete Plug and Play compatibility with external devices like USB tuners.

A bunch of USB Tuners work, then again some do not. You really have to find someone with an already working combo for any sort of guarantee of compatibility and reliability.

Your Linux Intel box runs a far more modern v4.13 Linux Kernel and because of that has almost guaranteed USB tuner compatibility. So does the Raspberry Pi.

Installing LibreELEC to internal is not going to corrupt DRM keys on the M8S Pro+ because they are stored in a secured storage area.

As I said you have to use the low level eMMC flashing - USB Burning Tool to Overwrite the DRM keys. That Tool has noting to do with LibreELEC

The DRM keys do not get overwritten on the similar WeTek Hub / Play2 when installing LibreELEC to internal eMMC/NAND.

    Everything remains intact.

Android HDCP 1.x Keys are tied to the MAC address of each individual hardware box I believe - they cannot be reflash or reused by end users.

Once they are overwritten they are gone. You cannot get Widevine L1 from user flashing Android Firmware either.

Both these have to be low level flashed at the Factory into secured storage.

If using the Android USB flashing TOOL - NEVER tick the "Overwrite Keys" box - Ever. That will kill DRM and HDCP permanently.

720p Netflix and 720p Amazon too I believe can work with some Alpha - LibreELEC Kodi Leia versions with some DIY.

See @Raybuntu's ODROID C2 Leia thread for self install and general Kodi Leia setup details.

Software decoded h264 10bit video in 720p resolution

That likely 10bit H264 combo (aka 10bit Anime) is NOT supported on 99.99% of media players and has to be CPU Software decoded every time.

It's an out of Spec "release group" combo.

AMLogic hardware does not have enough CPU ponies to reliably software decode that content.

You need to buy Intel hardware or a NVIDIA Shield if you want reliability with that sort of CPU Software decoded video playback or Remux it.

...but as there is only one S905D box on the market (KI Pro) I can say that it's quite good.

But do these have Dual independent DVB/ATSC TV modulators ?

Because frankly inbuilt single modulator implementations (ie most on the market) are a bit useless for use as a home networked PVR - you are better off with an external dual modulator USB Tuner in that case.

That is the exact one I currently have shipping in the mail for my ODROID C2.

I will then be able to finalise mapping and also get that exact remote added to the LibreELEC master code.

You will still have to run a simple one line script to install some u.dev rules to get it to work.

I consider these ABS plastic Xiaomi remotes the best one the market.

Design wise, ergonomics, button clickiness, repeat delay responsiveness. Xiaomi have nailed it IMHO for a simple BT remote.

Can I simply drop this new dtb.img file to the root of the sd card?

or does it require a complete reinstall.

Fast Samsung EVO (+), Samsung Select and Sandisk Class 10 UHS-1 microSDHC cards make a LE speed difference.

So do Wireless remotes like the MINIX A2 lite - they make a big difference, just like the Mi Box and FireTV.

So does installing LibreELEC to faster internal eMMC flash storage like the Mi Box or FireTV uses to run Kodi and Android Apps.

Then you also have the: (make a .tar backup first and store the .tar file on a PC)

DIY - [HOWTO] Boot from SD card, use internal memory for data.

In answer to the question - just drag and drop the dtb.img over the existing dtb.img you have on your SD card.

The dtb.img file provided wrxtasy will not activate the rear USB port. But use gxl_p212_2g.dtb with the remote.conf file provided by wrxtasy and the rear USB port will work again. Also confirm that wifi is no good

    Yes agreed.

I forgot to upload the correct dtb.img file into the MECOOL directory for the M8S Pro+

I've now since uploaded the correct dtb.img file and yes the rear USB2 port now works along with the tested Analog Audio and the IR remote:

WiFi is never going to work due to no Linux WiFi drivers available, but my v4.0 CSR Bluetooth USB dongle does work.

Also be aware there is a bad batch of M8S Pro+ boxes being sold with faulty eMMC storage, that when flashed with new Android Firmware brick themselves.

I suppose that is what happens with very little quality control or testing at the ultra budget end of the media player market.

some tv boxes have got updates recently that are running at 2ghz (Ugoos AM3 1.1.4 2017.07.07)

Ugoos are full of Bullshit. That is false advertising right there, because the 1.5GHz AML CPU hard limit has been known about for about a year.

As kszaq has already said only AML S9xx device we known of that can break the 1.5GHz barrier is the ODROID C2.

Android 5.1 is very stable, but I was told that many apps are no longer compatible with android 5.1, for example, kodi Krypton 17.0 is no longer compatible with Android Lollipop

That is incorrect. Android Kodi 17.x needs as a minimum Android Lollipop 5.x.x - which does not make a difference anyway on a device like the MINIX U1 as you would be using the superior LibreELEC Kodi anyway.

There are a whole bunch of us happily using LibreELEC Kodi Krypton on AMLogic S905's, we don't even care much about VP9 or HDR.

These days I would rather wait until cheaper Dolbyvision TV's come down in price and really hit the mass market and then it will be time to upgrade. Especially now that Apple has gotten the DV ball rolling with its Apple TV 4K. That is when you will visually see the biggest difference and get the best bang for your buck.

I also noticed that the latest Odroid-C2 build (8.1.9) doesn't work from EMMC. I will try SD card later (not yet tried). Version 8.1.8 works fine when burned via DD or via the LE bootcard maker. Version 8.1.9 ends up @ a black screen saying something about not being able to access "Libreelec_Disk" partition. I will update this later with the exact error.

On the eMMC or SD card....

    Rename boot.ini to boot.ini.broken

    Rename boot.ini.update to boot.ini

There is an error in the boot.ini file introduced by the LE 8.1.9 update.
