WeTeK Play 2 Error when I try to add a share from my NAS

Hello everybody,

I'm currently testing LibreELEC on a WeTek Play 2. Installation was a breeze, but when I try to add a share from my NAS I get the following error:

'Error

File exists'

When I try to access it after that I get the same error. I also tried OpenELEC and there I can just add my shares.

After that I'm getting the following error:

'Remote share

Couldn't connect to network server'

Any ideas on what might be going wrong?

Check whether you need to configure Kodi for SMB2 or SMB1 max client protocol - only possible in LE 8.1.0 or 8.1.1 beta.

Thanks for the reply. Where can I find which SMB version I need? I can't find anything on Google, here on the forums or the wiki that mentions SMB 1 or 2.

Just configure SMB2 and see if it works. If not configure SMB1 and check again. If neither works, that's not the problem.

I have no clue what Samba 1 or 2 is and I also can't find anything about it. How do I set that up?

So I am now trying LibreELEC with my ODROID C2 and I'm getting the same error...

I attached a picture of my tv in the SMB client settings, I can't find any SMB 1 or 2 settings.

I'm having the same issue on two devices now, I hope somebody can help me out!

The "maximum protocol version" option in the screenshots above allows you to restrict the Kodi SMB client to SMB1+ SMB2 only or SMB1 only - this is explained in the help text at the bottom of the Window. The default option is 'none' meaning no capping and the Kodi SMB client supports SMB1 + SMB2 + SMB3 connections. However, some older NAS and Windows versions do not auto-negotiate the SMB protocol version properly and need to have the client version forced. The version of Kodi in the OpenELEC 8.0.x release is only capable of making SMB1 connections so negotiation issues don't come up. First check the configuration on the NAS - if you can enable SMB2 or SMB3 you should do it as SMB1 is a major security problem. If you cannot change it, set the max protocol version to SMB1 and curse the NAS vendor for not providing updates.

Thanks for the reply chewitt!

I first tried to set the 'max protocol version' to SMB1, just to see if that worked. But I'm still getting the same error. Then I went in the options of my NAS and found quite some options which go way beyond my knowledge and experience.

First thing I saw for Microsoft Networking was WINS Server, this is also mentioned in Kodi under:

Settings/Services/SMB client

I added a screenshot of the options of my NAS (WINS server NAS.jpg).

Then I searched for SAMBA in my NAS and it gave me a few options one of which was an article in the help center (QNAP Microsoft Networking.jpg). You can see there that they mention 'Enable Highest SMB version'. And since it is under LDAP Domain Authentication/Advanced Settings/

So I added two more screenshots of the advanced settings under LDAP.

Is this what you were talking about? Because I have no clue how to set this up.

Hard to say. Your NAS has basically no configuration options for Samba so the only part that can be changed is the SMB client in Kodi. If this refuses to talk to your NAS even when restricted down to SMB1 something weird is wrong. I'd ask to see the log files from the NAS but that requires you to pastebin a log file and not send twenty screenshots, and I have zero knowledge on QNAP products (or any desire to obtain any) so I won't be giving detailed instructions on how that's done. Plan Z .. stick with LE 8.0.2 if it works.

You were right! I downgraded to 8.0.2 and it works now. Thanks for the help! I never would have figured this out on my own.

Are you a mod or admin on this forum? If yes, would it be an idea to make a (sticky) post about which NAS brands/types/firmware's etc are compatible with LE 8.1.1. So that new users or people having similar problems like me won't have to post the a similar question?

Also, which brand of NAS would you advise to get? And would 8.1.1 work with FreeNAS? As I probably prefer to build my own NAS.

It's a terrible idea because compatibility lists are never maintained and are thus instantly out of date. I also strongly doubt your current box is incompatible, it's just not configured right.
