Unable to play HD 720p on LAN with 802.11n

  • I have a Rp2 with a TP-Link RTL892CU 802.11n WiFi dongle connecting through WiFi to the LAN to a Rp2 server (wired). It's a standard LibreElec new install with Kodi 17.x with Amber skin (config all copied from userdata from an existing Arch install). I've also tried this on a clean install with LibreElec defaults. Tested on SFTP and NFS

The problem is the HD video is unable to play without stopping, the WiFi dongle is going mad. SD seems to play without a problem. CPU usage seems reasonable and WiFi signal is strong.

This looks like a WiFi problem on the face of it, although I thought that HD would play on 802.11n. Is this a WiFi problem? If so, Unable to go wired so I am looking for a solution? Is there a driver update I can instal for RTL892CU or do I need to upgrade to 802.11ac?

    Partial log below

    thanks

  • I think I found a solution. The WiFi connection I was using was set to use 802.11b/g/n. I changed this to use only 802.11n and the playback is fine now on HD 720p. I am guessing that the dongle was connecting with 802.11g (or worse b).

This is a decent workaround, but is this not a bug in the driver or can I configure the driver to work only n mode? The problem is that I have an old laptop that doesn't play with new toys.

    thanks

  • Normal 720p is possible with a 802.11g connection. So the circumstances are probably not optimal for you. Too many thick walls?
