[RPi] 3D Support builds

  • Your optimism is noted, but to be crystal clear: If anyone shows up in this forum with a 1GB board and 4K playback issues we're going to auto-respond by pointing fingers at RAM size and investigate no further.

    Yes this is 100% true!
Just saying that if you want to build a dedicated 3D player and happen to have/find a 1GB RPi5 you might get away with it. Using a 2GB version will work for all scenarios. Buying a 4GB version is a waste of money.

  • Popcornmix,

Huge THANK YOU for taking the time to put this together!

I bought an RPI5 2GB just for this project. Ive installed your latest image and am able to watch 3d ISo now!

My question is concerning 1080P FP content on a 1080P Panasonic Plasma. I believe frame pack at 1080P should be supported on this TV but correct me if wrong. When I run "kmsprint -m" I dont see "3dfp|16:9" on the list until the 1080i settings are displayed.

    Many Thanks!

Looks like it's only reporting support for *interlaced* frame packed. Also no 24p modes.

If you post your edid, we can see exactly what is supported:

    Code
    edid-decode /sys/devices/platform/axi/axi:gpu/drm/card?/card?-HDMI-A-1/edid | pastebinit

    and post url returned

  • Are you sure this paste is complete? I'd expect more than 13 lines of output.

  • Its not the complete list. Sorry for the confusion. I just wanted to highlight the frame packing option was 1080i and not 1080p, if Im reading this correctly.

    Here is the entire list:

  • Admittedly, I'm a beginner at this, so I apologize if these are stupid questions. I just want to confirm I've got this set up and functioning at the highest possible option...

What's the best way for me to confirm a 3d MKV or ISO video is playing at the optimal level for my hardware?

    No worries :)
If your TV automatically goes into 3D when you start playing the video it is using the frame packing mode and you are getting the best quality you can get.

    Debug logs
I've been playing movies and have noticed that sometimes the subtitles loose their depth and go 2D.
Here is a log from my RPi, I start a Avatar - Fire and Ash. Skip forward a bit and around 14:10 the subtitles go 2D until the next scene and then 3D again.

Also sometimes when skipping the whole RPi freezes, it does the buffer animation and go up to 100 and then frozen. No SSH or nothing. Not sure if it got captured in the log of not, this is the kodi.old.log after pulling the power and starting again.

  • I just stumbled upon a file that behaves weirdly.

The Hobbit in 3D is separated into two discs. I ripped them into a decrypted folder using MakeMKV and used tsmuxer 2.20 to join them together. The reason why I merged them this way, and not via MKVToolNix, is a massive "vsync off" drift that occurs in Kodi when the first part ends and the second part starts. Don't get me wrong, the whole file and playback are in sync, but the "vsync off" (shown via Ctrl+Shift+O) value drifts massively and can cause frame drops later on... Muxed with tsmuxer Im not seeing such a drift...

With the 3d file created by tsmuxer, Kodi sees that it's a 3D file, asks how to play it, but then only shows a 2D image, as seen in the photos. I remuxed the file via MKVToolNix to see if it's any different - same outcome.

The file does not seem to be "broken," as "Stereoscopic Player" on Windows just plays it fine in 3D.

Attached are a sample file as well as the debug log.

(Side note: The RPI5 build also runs fine on the RPI5 compute module! ;) )

  • Potential fixes for NTM-3D’s sub depth issue an mitzsch’s mkv issue.

The skipping issue I couldn’t reproduce. Seemed from the log that DTS audio couldn’t be opened. An interesting test would be the same thing with pass through disabled.

  • Potential fixes for NTM-3D’s sub depth issue...

Just tried the new version but still get 2D subtitles from time to time and skipping still can freeze the RPi completely so I have to pull the powercable to recover. What do you want me to try and capture in logs?

The last log had failures opening the audio sink as passthrough - can you check if issue still occurs with passthrough enabled.

Also would be good if I can test with the same file. Can you see these issues with one of these files:
300, Amazling Spider-Man, Cars, Coraline, Doctor Strange, Edge of Tomorrow, Gravity, Inside Out

If you do, then post a debug log when playing one of those, and indicate when it froze or subs were 2D.

  • I will try and see if I can trigger it on any of those movies. But I have a few observations so far. I tried the RPi5 on the AVR setup and when skipping around it also fails, but this one kernel paniced, see the photo. If I disable passthrough it seems to work, so something connected to passthrough that fails hard.

The subtitles do seem better on the RPi5 using the latest, atleast I have not seen any 2D yet. But still problems on the RPi4. It is not always the same subtitles texts that are 2D but there seems to be "hotspots" in the videos where they are more likely. That combined with the greater likelihood on the RPi4 may indicate where the issue is.

Will report back when I have been able to test more.
