[RPi5] Black screen after updating from LE 12.2.1 to LE 13

  • Description of the problem

After updating from LE 12.2.1 to LE 13, the RPi5 fails to boot after a reboot or there is no video signal. Just a black screen.

    How to reproduce

    Steps to reproduce the behavior:

    1. Go to Libreelec -> Updates -> Show Custom Channels -> Add custom channel: https://test.libreelec.tv/ . Then Update Channel -> Libreelec-13.00 and choose "LibreELEC Version: LibreELEC-RPi5.aarch64-13.0-nightly-20260413-5ff7627.img.gz (sha256)"
    2. After downloading, installing and rebooting, only a black screen is visible. The RPi5 no longer responds

    Information

    • LibreELEC Version: LE 12.2.1 -> LibreELEC-RPi5.aarch64-13.0-nightly-20260413-5ff7627.img.gz (sha256)
    • Hardware Platform: RPi5

    Context

I want to update to LE 13 because LE 12 is currently having an issue with the CastagnaIT Netflix plugin. According to some users, this would be resolved with LE 13. See CastagnaIT/plugin.video.netflix#1785

Installing a LE 13 image on a new Micro SD card has the same effect.

Any help is welcome. Thanks in advance.

  • Some things to try (not in any specific sequence):

    a) Remove the SD card and power on the RPi board. Check that the firmware screen shows up and HDMI and EDID are 'OK'

    b) Check that you've updated to the lasted RPi-eeprom firmware? If not, update and try again

    c) See if the image here https://chewitt.libreelec.tv/testing/LibreE…-12.90.1.img.gz behaves any different?

    d) Using a spare SD card write the nightly image to the card (so clean install not update) .. booting?

I'm using an RPi5 with my own nightly image for aeons without issues so there's no general problem. I have a hunch it might be eeprom firmware related (b).

  • Thanks for the information, Chewitt. It was very helpful.

After updating the RPi-eeprom firmware, I was able to install LE 13.

However, I’m now getting a message saying that the inputstream.adaptive add-on isn’t compatible. I can’t figure out how to install the correct version of inputstream.adaptive.

    Any suggestions?

  • After installing inputstream.adaptive-22.3.10.1, LE 13 does indeed work, including the Netflix add-on. The only thing that doesn't work is TvHeadend. I get a message saying the add-on is not compatible. I'm using TvHeadend 4.3. Is it possible that LE 13 doesn't support TvHeadend?

  • After updating TvHeadend Client, it’s working again. At first, I couldn’t update it, but after forcing updates, I was able to update the TvHeadend Client from version 21.2.6.1 to 22.8.2.1. Everything is now working as it should.

Many thanks to Chewitt and J.D.
