Urgent Help Needed with Kodi/LibreELEC on Raspberry Pi for Video Playback

  • Hello everyone,

I have a bit of a situation and I'm hoping for some guidance. I'm relatively new at my organization, and we use Kodi on LibreELEC (running on Raspberry Pi) for displaying content on monitor. The previous sysadmin left without handing over any information about this setup.

Here’s what I need to accomplish urgently:

Remotely start video playback on a Raspberry Pi (connected to a monitor).

Have a playlist of videos play automatically, one after another.

Set this playlist to loop infinitely (so after the last video, the first one starts again).

I'm under significant pressure to get this working. Could anyone please provide me with step-by-step advice or point me in the right direction? I'm ready to dig into any documentation or tutorials.

Any help would be immensely appreciated!

  • LibreELEC is an appliance-like distro and most of the filesystem is read-only, which means there are limited places for the previous admin to squirrel away the scripts or config needed for automating things; it's all located under /storage somwhere. As there are many different ways to achieve "run this script on boot" (with the script telling Kodi to play a playlist) you'll need to dig around.

Most of what you need to figure-out/learn should be covered with articles in the Kodi wiki, e.g. https://kodi.wiki/view/Playlists and https://kodi.wiki/view/JSON-RPC_API or https://kodi.wiki/view/List_of_built-in_functions depending on the level of remote or scripted control is needed. I am not aware of any specific "kiosk" write-ups in this forum (or Kodi forum) although the question has been asked before so Google searching on Kodi + kiosk might throw up some independent results.
