TV resolution/scaling not correctly recognized with older Samsung TV

  • I am using an older Samsung TV where I have the problem, that kodi doesn't recognize the TV's resolution (or, the other way around, the TV doesn't recognize Kodi's output correctly). I have to press the scaling button on the remote (captioned "psize") multiple times to get a scaling factor which fits the kodi screen to the TV.

This is how it looks right after boot (note the cuts on the left and top right):

And after pressing 4 times the "psize" button on the remote, this is how it looks then:

I have looked after some kind of setting, but there's none. And I assume it is a problem of the TV. However, is there a known solution for this problem? I have already updated libreelec but the problem persists.

    Thanks in advance,

    Tom

  • This is a TV underscan problem and not an HTPC hardware or software problem.

HDMI ports are not always equal. If the TV has other ports, move the cable around and see if any of them work better? See if any are configured for 'PC' use and if possible set them to 'normal' (or some other) mode. You can also see if changing the default desktop resolution from 1080@60 to 1080@50 in case this generates a better outcome?

The option of last resort is to 'calibrate' the output via Kodi settings > System > Display > Calibration. It's the worst option because unlike a CRT tube where calibration mechanically adjusts the spread of the electron beam to better fit the screen, this change is digital and done in software. Calibration forces Kodi to squee``ze e.g. 1920 x1080 pixels into 1900 x1060, with the remaining pixels to make up 1920 x 1080 rendered black. It's a lossy process and 'squeezing' the image can lead to other visual artefacts in playback.

  • Hi, Always try to start the TV first, than the LE/Kodi device. Some old TV's doesn't provide EDID (display data) when are in stand-by and the LE don't know what it's the correct resolution. If it's an old TV, the native resolution can be different than the 1080 (full HD), try to find the native resolution (ex. try with a PC or switching the resolution in the LE settings - when you got the best sharp picture). Example I have an old LG with 1366 x 768 at 60Hz.
