Heyho,
i have been googling for quite some time and found several now dead project that joined libreelec with retroarch.
Is there anything working out there? It is kinda sad you basically have to run a lakka and a kodi box unless you want to deal with a fullblown windows or linux desktop just to switch between the two.
i so hope the sometime join forces and make an entertainment station os.
Any working retroarch addon?

Since about 2016 .. it's not the best-documented thing but if you've experience with other retrogaming systems and understand the components it's not so hard to figure out (in the end, it is just retroplayer, in Kodi).

You could try and have a look at https://github.com/zach-morris/repository.zachmorris
The plugin uses The Internet Archive to fetch retro games.
So you will need an account for https://archive.org/

See https://github.com/bite-your-idols/Gamestarter - it works on LibreELEC generic x86_64-12.0.1.
I've had no success on the generic-legacy build however.

I've been looking in to it as well because I'd like to play N64 Super smash bro's. That emulator is not preinstalled into the kodi package sadly. If someone can point me in the right direction for how to do that, much appreciated.

I don't use retroarch on libreelec, I have a usb drive with batocera for retro gaming,
but there is no retroarch core build for aarch64 (Rpi4 and Rpi5 build) , even if there is a build for retroarch, so maybe you have to install core manually form this https://github.com/christianhaitian/retroarch-cores

Cissou , Oeh that's interesting. So you prep the USB stick and when you wanna game you just unpress the SD card before a reboot? Am I understanding this correctly? I am not understanding what the consequences of the 'core build' are. Is that just a different/additional download or do I have to change stuff to my Pi itself?
-
Just swap the SD card and you boot a whole new OS (with retroarch). Cores are emulators; there are lots of them so you only need to download and install the ones you need and/or are appropriate for your hardware.

A lot of way to do it, another sd card, a usb stick/drive/ssd.
for the core (emulator), if you use the kodi addon, or the raspberry pi OS package, there will be no or just few core available, you'll need to download aarch64 build of the core.
but if you use a retro gamin OS, all the core will be available (most of the time, core working well on your system)
