[RPi4] DTS:X support?

  • Hi all, little investigation here into DTS pass through.

    I have a new soundbar which now supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Atmos content plays without an issue but DTS:X, it reverts back to the standard DTS core (not even DTS MA).

    Any idea what could be the cause? MediaInfo confirms the audio track is DTS MA, with DTS X metadata. I'm currently on a nightly release (20240917, 12.0.1), perhaps a newer one has this ironed out?

  • How is your RPi connected to the soundbar?

    1. RPi4 -> TV -> Soundbar
    2. RPi4 -> Soundbar -> TV

    For case 1 your TV and the soundbar must be connected via eARC not only ARC to support high bit rate audio at the return channel. Sometimes it's only available at a specific HDMI port and maybe additional configurable in the settings of the TV.

    In the second case, do you have ensured that you set the audio channels to 7.1?

    You are right that some issues were corrected (in worst case introduced ;)) after 12.0.1 release and a recent nightly build may work better, but it's more helpful when you enable debug logging, reboot and provide a link to the log.

  • It's connected RPi4 -> Soundbar -> TV. I updated to the latest nightly but that made no difference. eARC is on, Atmos works so it's either the file or something up with Libreelec.

  • Hi silentsound, be sure to switch to EXPERT MODE in Kodi settings, go to Settings/System/Audio and "Enabled passthrough" for all containers including TrueHD and DTS-HD.

    The reason you're getting Atmos is maybe related to the audio container of the file (DD+ instead of TrueHD).

  • Hi there, thanks for the answer.

    Everything is ticked, I get DTS MA from other files. What's weird is this DTS X file completely limits the MA and plays the standard DTS core.

    Something might be up with my rip, I'll keep looking.
