Hi,
I wanted to add the kmscube package to my image by
PROJECT=NXP DEVICE=iMX6 ARCH=arm UBOOT_SYSTEM=cubox-q ADDITIONAL_PACKAGES="kmscube" make image
but that does not seem to have an effect 
Can anybody tell how I can do that?

someone correct me if i am behind and wrong but to my best i thought kmscube required either the lima or panfrost graphics drivers and opengles v2 support...
not sure if that is your issue but thought i would add my 2cents and see if someone with more knowledge on the nxp platform will chime in.

No, my issue is that kmscube does not seem to get build and included in the image

Create a .libreelec/options file either in your home directory or in the root of the LE git directory and set ADDITIONAL_PACKAGES there. See LibreELEC.tv/options at master · LibreELEC/LibreELEC.tv · GitHub
Note that some projects set ADDITIONAL_PACKAGES so it's best to append to that variable. eg
CodeADDITIONAL_PACKAGES="$ADDITIONAL_PACKAGES kmscube"so long,
