HDMI stops working

i am having an issue with my hdmi on RPI4 retropie. it starts up sometimes i have to take the hdmi out and plug it back in but then when i select a game to play screen goes black again. but for the last few weeks it has been working fine until today. i also have tried 3 different hdmi cords. all 3 of them worked in the past. could it be software or sd card corruption?
