You should be able to just use LPCM instead and shouldn't notice a difference

Depending on equipment and decoders, there could be a difference.

I don't see an answer to the OP's question. RPi4 now has the hardware. Any idea when we'll have a release of libreelec that will leverage it? My RPi4 wants to show its stuff.
RPiF folks are working on HBR audio but the BCM2711 SoC in the RPi4 is effectively a custom part assembled from the IP of several other chips so existing Broadcom sample code and documentation are a bit lacking - there's an element of reverse engineering involved. Video work has a higher priority right now, but audio will get there eventually.
Hi Guys,
Any update on Dolby Atmos support ?
There is some progress on HD audio (not specifically about Atmos) but things are still not at the stage where things should go into public images for general consumption. And video things still have priority over audio.
It's very early days but if you are in the mood to try a highly experimental testbuild you'll find it here: RPi4 testbuild with HD audio passtrhough (Atmos etc)
so long,

Hi,
I just tested the 9.95.1 Kodi 10 beta with 2 contents :
1 UHD h265 Dolby True HD 7.1 audio
1 UHD h265 DTS True HD Master
It works perfectly !
You have done a great job, thanks to all developpers and contributors !
I've just upgraded Librelec to 10.0.1 and I can confirm that audio passthrough is still working well
