See pages 2/3/4 of this thread for a similar problem that miketyson was having and how you'd go about debugging.

For everyone seeing the lack of connections following upgrade from a 3.x version, 4.0.6 hopefully fixes this. If you've already experienced the problem, you may need to install and then use Settings/Utilities/Reset VPN provider files to clean up the mess your install is in. This should be a one hit thing with future upgrades working fine.
Big thanks to crashnz for providing the debug I needed.
If you see this problem AFTER installing 4.0.6 and resetting the VPN provider files, then get a log with debug switched on as per the first post.
If you're having other VPN connection problems, move to 4.0.6 and reset the VPN provider files to ensure you're on the latest ovpn files. Then check the Trouble Shooting guide, because that's what I'm going to ask you to do next anyway.

Click the switch option and it'll go from the names to the server names.

Ok, thanks. I need to get my environment into the same state as yours and see what happens, bit this will take a few days. Thanks for your help, getting lots, etc suggest you go with one of the pre 4.0 versions for now

Does disabling indigo make any difference? After you have, do a settings/utilities/remove vpn provider files as before and also click settings/default and then reboot. If it doesn't make any difference I just need to know, I don't need a log.
-
What version did you start from?
Go to settings/utilities, clear downloads, clear vpn provider files. Turn on settings/debug and start the connect. If it fails, log and tell me what's in the two directories I mentioned.

Thanks for the cmd string, I would never have guessed that one :s Entered it through putty. Not 100% sure if I did it the right way. Copy of log attached.
I am away for a couple of weeks making it difficult to try any other diagnostics. If you don't mind can we pick up the thread when I return?
Thanks again for your time
The command needs to be entered on a single line as shown exactly after you've tried to connect. Right now it just looks like it can't find the ovpn and then it has a hissy fit at some randomness typed on the end. When you get it to work, the output will be in /run/openvpn.log
-
Hmmm, the problem is not what I thought it was.
What's in /storage/.kodi/userdata/addon_data/service.vpn.manager/Downloads/PureVPN/ ?And what's in /storage/.kodi/addons/service.vpn.manager/PureVPN/ ?
-
/usr/sbin/openvpn "/storage/.kodi/addons/service.vpn.manager/PureVPN/London 1 (UDP).ovpn" > /run/openvpn.log &

I mean try and connect to something via the command line, not just type in the command. You can see the the command being used in the log, copy that if

Doesn't seem like a pervasive problem as I've only had it reported to me once.
Any clues on what could be causing this? I found this thread, but I'm clueless as to why someone with exactly the same setup as me is seeing this problem and I'm not

Seeing/hearing infrequent audio drop out (I'm using passthru HDMI to optical to an amp) with both local and streaming media and when I paid attention to why (for local media to eliminate any network latency), I saw this kinda noise in the log.
I cleared the cache, restarted and switched on debug, but haven't been able to recreate it since.
I googled but failed...is there a reason for the ErrorAdjust messages that I should go look at to stop this from coming back? It's only started happening since I upgrade from 7 to 8.

Ok good, thanks for mentioning this. Was this because you added the space or the remote did this for you? And what remote are you using? I'd like to know so I can ask others when they get random connection problems

Hi Zomboided,
Thanks for the reply
I've attached the latest logfile where I tried to connect on two separate occasions.
Not really sure if I'm doing the log file thing properly. I have got the enable debug for just VPN manager checked and then I copied log files to the Homefolder/downloads. From there I went onto the network and selected LibreElec and downloads. Is this the right way of doing it are you getting the information required? Thanks in advance
You connection is timing out. Last time I saw this it was because missing packages on the underlying operating system. You should run openvpn via the command line and verify it works. There are instructions on the wiki in troubleshooting (see first post). I can't see that the addon is doing anything wrong.

Hi,I'm having the same issues as seen by solorize on the 9th. Nothing happens after clicking "switch between location and server views". Is 4.0.3 available yet? I'm not seeing it here: Releases · Zomboided/service.vpn.manager · GitHub
Cheers
Install it from my repo, I'll upload it to GitHub when I get a chance

Hello together,is there a way to use two VPN Provider? When I travel it would be nice to have either a VPN for geoblocking or another to my home LAN.
I'm I right that at the moment I only can have one provider? So when I want to switch between "homeVPN" and "providerVPN" I have to reset and reconfigure the VPN Manager?
Thanks in advanceUse User Defined where you give it both the provider ovpn files and the ovpn file for your home network. You can read about how to use User Defined on the wiki

Hi all,
I’m having a problem with the VPN Manger not connecting. Currently subscribed to PureVPN and running a fresh install of LibreElec 8.1 kodi 17.1 on a Matricom MX 2 box. I have not installed any addons yet except Zomboided repository and. Vpn manager.
With the VPN Provider selected PureVPN and username and password entered it does its stuff but I keep getting the "error connecting to VPN something unexpected happened. Retry to check openvpn operation and then check log"
One of the lines in the openvpn log reads Warning: No server certificate verification method has been enabled. Could this be the problem? Desperately seeking any advice having trawled the forums and Google for hours..Any help in the right direction would be most welcome
ThanksThe log file doesn't show you trying to connect so is of no help. Get a log with debug switched on of you trying to connect

Hi!I have a similar problem as already reported here. After being away from home for couple of days, when I turned on my LibreELEC on R-Pi 2, the 10 VPN servers configuration within OpenVPN Manager addon was gone. When I tried to configure them again, I started getting error messages about failed authentication. I've tried deleting all config as solorize mentioned above but it didn't help.
(Logon credentials for NordVPN work fine from Windows laptop or Android phone.)Log attached. Please let me know if I should provide more info.
Version Info
VPN provider: NordVPN
VPN manager for OpenVPN: 4.0.3
LibreELEC: 8.0.1
Kodi: 17.1It looks like you're using the wrong password. You should double check and then do the reset VPN provider option again (no need to reset the downloaded files). Or maybe Nord have changed their servers again, I'd need to check. Does this happen for all locations or have you only tried the us9 one that you're showing me in the log?

Ok good...this empty list bug is frustrating me as a few people have seen it. I've pushed out 4.0.3 on the repo with better debug and a potential fix. Get me a log if you see it again

@ last 2 posters, go and read the first post and get a full log.

That won't work because he's putting the files in the wrong place. They'll be wiped out if the add-on changes - the problem that you saw that I've just fixed.
